Stunning indeed, but wouldn't be near my top10 of all time. Dracula would be somewhere in there though.

One of the best releases of 2010.
One of the most important releases of my life.

I just finished listening to one of the WOW scores of this year, and I don't mean World of Warcraft:
CASTLEVANIA: LORDS OF SHADOW - OSCAR ARAUJO
WOW!
WOW!
WOW!
Another incredible videogame score. Epic in scope, huge in sound, fully orchestral / choral but and this could be viewed as a minor niggle, lacking a strong central theme to keep all the music together. There are melodies and fantastic outbursts everywhere, but nothing that'll stick, at least not after one listen. I'll have to listen some more to find it, but those who know me, I need at least one theme to identify with. Other than that, this music is definitely WOW in every sense of the word. If this was written for a film, it would be for a larger than life heroic adventure movie, featuring a badass with a big sword preparing to save the world, getting into many bloody battles and getting the girl in the end. And ending with a big celebration / coronation scene.
I'll say it one more time:
WOW!!!!!!!

NP: My Love Is Always Here - Deathly Hallows
A gorgeous choral cue. It's not funny like Williams's Double Trouble, nor dark like Hooper's In Noctem. It's very peaceful and shame on Desplat for not using more chorus in the score, and also this new theme. -

Pan Tadeusz - Wojciech Kilar
Were someone to suggest that this is, in fact, worthy of consideration as a film score of some quality, then I (James Southall I) would suggest that person's opinion may, indeed, be worthy of consideration itself. -

One of the very best scores in the history of Polish film music! Deserves any recognition outside of the country as well.
And it became a cultural phenomenon in Poland, in a way. The Polonez is a traditional Polish dance, very solemn, used in official parties and balls for years. The tradition of a ball with a Polonaise right now is limited to a so-called studniowka, a "ball of 100 days". The 100 days being until the Matura, the exams finishing high school (like German Abitur, English A-levels, if I understand well, or American SAT). Right now the Polonez (polonaise, of course French for Polish dance) played on the parties all over the country is the one that Kilar wrote for this movie. An example of film music that becomes almost a pop hit in a way.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

NP: A Day In The Life Of Lemuel Guilliver - Guilliver's Travels (Henry Jackman)
Nice opening, with a nice main theme played with the brass, piano and guitars. I love that Jackman still makes scores with a orchestra that really sounds like a orchestra. -

Yeap, true. Although first half it's a bit sparse and fragmented, from the 2nd half and onto the ending, it's a full-on powerhouse. Big, bold and symphonic! Quite a nice surprise. If this man learns how to attribute thematic coherence in his feature scores, we'll probably have a winner here.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Surprised to read this. I thought it was dull, uninspired, entirely generic RC stuff some way behind the most enjoyable scores for animations by the second and third tier RC composers (which is what it most resembles). -

A funny thing here.
If something's RCP and/or ZImmer's people tend to criticize it a lot. Doing the same again, etc. When Daft Punk wrote Tron: Legacy, which in many ways resembles Zimmer (a score I like, BTW, a lot) - the Adagio sounds like old Hans, similarities to Inception, Batman scores, everybody raves about it.
The magic of a name? All things Zimmer (I don't mean James here) are just bad, all things RCP are even worse, but when somebody *else* does something similar, it's brilliant?http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

I did write about why I thought Tron went beyond Remote Control. It was probably in the David Arnold thread (where else would it be!?) Basically, because it sounds like an organic integration of orchestra (properly-written, properly-orchestrated orchestral music, I mean - obviously not by Daft Punk, but equally obviously not the result of an orchestrator just fleshing out melody lines written on a keyboard) and electronics written by people who really know and understand electronics. The orchestra part's done properly, the electronic part's done properly, they're integrated beautifully. Clearly there is a large Hans Zimmer influence there (a huge one) but there are plenty of other influences too and the whole thing comes together so beautifully. If anything, I'd say it shows that you CAN take the Zimmer approach and do it with proper orchestral music - you don't need the brass to sound like samples, you don't need to electronically manipulate the life out of the sounds of the orchestra.
Having said all the above - it's not my favourite score of the year. Inception is. -

I didn't jab at you here. I am jabbing at people who give Inception 1 or 2 stars and 5 to Tron: Legacy. With me both are very strong 4 star scores.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -
