David Munrow, composer for Elizabeth R is a bit of a pioneer of early period music and so the piece you are thinking of may actually be an original piece.

[EDIT] I think that should read "was" rather than "is" - he died in 1976.

  1. Goodness! Munrow composed music for Zardoz!

  2. Martijn, there was a BBC Recordings record released in 1971 that featured some of his music from the series:

But, I imagine that it's not available today.

  3. Martijn, I see that the theme for Elizabeth R may be entitled "The Leaves Be Green". Could this be it?

    NP: Jumanji - James Horner

Not one that is talked about often. Highly underrated. It's not one of Horner's best scores but when it's good, it's really good. The epic 9 minute plus finale cue "Jumanji" is stunning! Great main theme as well. The only cringe worth moment is the circus type music written for the monkeys. I never liked it and I absolutely loathe hearing that theme in the end credit suite. Beside that, this is still a very, very strong score! Lots of adventure, mystery and suspense.

Last night I listened to The Pagemaster. Wow! I forgot just how absolutely spectacular that score is. Big, bold themes for pirates, dragons, monsters, and wizards. Fans of Willow will gobble this one up!

  4. And finally on the subject of Munrow, his music for the BBC production of Henry VIII and His Six Wives is available on CD.

    Yep, well aware of that.
Lovely music (I think this again is a compilation of existing early medieval work than a proper soundtrack. Never mind, though!)

On Elizabeth R.: thanks for all the digging, Alan!
Rather to my dismay the theme is nothing like the track on that lost LP.
I fear now that either I completely misremember (in which case it's unlikely I'll ever find out what track it was I was talking about), or that the track was one of those "rerecorded/based/inspired on" pieces.

    NP: THE ROCKETEER (James Horner)

Like Erik, I'm going through my Horners, even those that are a bit too rambunctious for my taste. I guess this falls into that category, but it's very good nonetheless.
    I am extremely serious.

NP: October Sky - Mark Isham

Continuing with my Joe Johnston love-fest! wink I don't remember much from this score... I think I've only played it once since I got it back in 1998. I do remember the fiddle theme, which perfectly complements the tone of the film. Looking forward to rediscovering this one.

OH MAN THAT'S BRILLIANT! I. MUST HAVE.

If you'd have asked me to hum the majority of those I couldn't have done it but as soon as I listened I recognised ( instantly ) 22 of the 26 tracks! It's funny that to us Brits of a certain age that 'THE GONK' was familiar to us as a theme from 'Vision On' long before we were old enough to watch George A. Romero zombie flicks wink

p.s. I can't believe I was familiar with a Georges Delerue track without ever knowing it was Georges Delerue dizzy If I'd been asked to name the composer I think I'd have probably guessed Michel Legrand.

NP: Green Lantern - James Newton Howard

EDIT: A very JNH-esque score, though is heavy on electronics, which sometimes drowns the orchestra, the main theme is just a 5 notes motif. There's some good choral parts.

Got through my first listen and my feeling is very mixed about this score. The green lantern fanfare sounds exactly like a JNH style fanfare (similar to his Vertical Limit one), however it is a bit short, under developed, and ultimately underwhelming. The theme for Parallax is interesting, characterized by Gustav Holst's Mars-esque orchestral stabs. The short brass passage at the beginning of "Abin Sur" was really nice and I would have loved to hear the score from that orchestrational POV. Yeah, so, I'm incredibly surprised at the massive amount of electronics in this score and for a JNH action adventure score too. I would never have thought that Martin Campbell would have envisioned the score to be so electronic heavy, given his prior composer pairings. But ultimately, the score is thematic, with frequent blast of the fanfare/theme between all of the electronic soundscapes and heavy, heavy percussion cues. And at time you hear the orchestra working underneath it all, which makes the listening experience of this, electronic/orchestra hybrid score, a every intriguing experience. It may grow on me after seeing the movie.

October Sky was a lovely restrained chamber like score highlighted by the last three tracks especially the final cue "October Sky" which contains the most satisfying rendition of Isham's main theme.

NP: Jurassic Park III - Don Davis

Davis did a great job mimicking the already established Williams sound while at the same time bringing in his own arsenal to the table. The new family theme is a bit on the saccharine side but it's great to hear Davis' own arrangement of Williams classic original themes including the use of the Raptors motif from the first film. All that is missing is "The Lost World" theme... because that where this film takes place. So, while it was great to hear the themes from the first film incorporated into this score I guess they are inappropriate for this film.

    Anywho, excellent score!

Exactly. Still, I hope the electronics can be toned down in the film.

NP: Elegy - Battle Los Angeles (Brian Tyler)

Beautiful. I love the quiet renditions of the two main themes of the score. And the vocal and choral work, though is short in this cue.

A little too head-on, action-heavy, but I agree with you. HERE is a score that clearly pays hommage to Williams' style, as opposed to the Desplat POTTER that everybody went on about at FSM.
