Over at Filmtracks there was a thread asking to list our favorite cues of the year... so far. I haven't heard many GREAT scores but there have been some great individual tracks written for film this year. I'm currently spinning my ten current favorites which include...
- "The Vampire Train" from PRIEST by Christopher Young
A big, meaty, action cue that blends the modern techniques of RC/MV and Young's own organic and unique orchestral palette.
- "Captain America March" from CAPTAIN AMERICA by Alan Silvestri
I don't have too many kind words to say about the score proper but this piece is extraordinary!
- "Go In Peace" from EL GRAN MILAGRO by Mark McKenzie
A piece written from the heart and soul of one of the most under appreciated composers of our time.
- "The Rising Soul (End Credits) from HAWK by Stuart Hancock
If the rest of the score was this good it would be on my Top 10 list easily. Too bad the producers ditch the original idea of a thematically rich score instead opting for the dull, textured, atmospheric bore fest we were given.
- "Letting Go" from SUPER 8 by Michael Giacchino
The score as a whole is rather lukewarm and the film (especially this scene) tries far too hard to give us the same sort of epic and emotional climax we experienced in E.T. Unfortunately, Abrams couldn't deliver the goods however Giacchino did his best to make up for that lack of emotion in his music and he let's it all pour out in this splendid finale cue!
- "Game of Thrones Main Theme" from GAME OF THRONES by Ramin Djawadi
Next to McKenzie's track above this is my favorite cue of the year accompanying one of the finest main title sequences I've ever seen! Great show as well!
- "Circles" from THE TREE OF LIFE by Alexandre Desplat
I'd gladly take more of Desplat in this mode then in Harry Potter mode. A superb album from start to finish that warrants repeated listens.
- "Turtle Bay Surfing" from SOUL SURFER by Marco Beltrami
One of the finest scores of the year and one of Beltrami's strongest dramatic scores.
- "Main Title" from SOURCE CODE by Chris Bacon
We rarely hear main title cues like this any more.
- "Final Montage: The Power of Movies" from THESE AMAZING SHADOWS by Peter Golub
Written for a documentary about the National Film Registry and the power of film. Golub concludes his impressive score with this emotional cue that slowly builds into a swell of orchestral warmth, sweep, power and emotion!

Hypnotic and intoxicating, I picked this up when La La Land re-released it and it's got a lot of listens since. I'm not sure why I love it so much but it gets me every time. -

I like this cue very much too and as for the show, I've seen it (don't ask how since it's not aired yet in Greece) I think it's pretty well done but a bit hardcore as is the book.Whatever you gaze rests on,do not use your vision, but the eyes of your soul...She knows better... -
