    NP: FAMILY PLOT (John Williams)

Love the baroque feel of the main theme and certain tracks, not too keen on the suspense music. But great to finally have this released!
    I am extremely serious.

This film and score don't get enough credit!

I love the tracks on the Williams/Spielberg albums with the Boston Pops and that's how I first became familiar with this score. Much prefer those to the original recordings, to be honest. It's one of the very few Williams/Spielberg albums I would never even think about playing.

Indeed! I love that decade of Barry's Bond scores. Very, very cool!

Speaking of "FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE" a good friend of mine (and house sitter when I go on holiday) scored and won the FSM Composers Challenge scoring the unscored train fight scene!
Mick chose to write it in a 60s Goldsmithian style to avoid it sounding like a John Barry take off.
He even received praise from a Mr. William Stromberg!
I hope he gets work in the industry one day because he really does have the gift and instincts to score well!

NP: The Dark Knight - Hans James Newton Zimmer Howard

I liked Batman Begins but it wasn't something I play often... now I love this sequel score much more.
I've played it often since I got the album...

Aggressive Expansion and Like A dog Chasing Cars are my favorite tracks so far. cool

Anyone here know about Yanni? The goofiest looking guy in the universe. I only know of two of his pieces: If I could tell you and The nightingale and I adore them both. Has he made other good pieces?

No, not really. I love electronic music, but Yanni has always been too cheesy for me. Lofty new age stuff, with clichéed themes for a better world and peace on earth and chirping birds. I have a couple of tunes, and the only one I kinda like is the upbeat "Sand Dance" -- but still with a wink in the eye.

NP: FAR AND AWAY (John Williams)

Colourful is such an overused word, but it describes this score well. I love it! (film is mediocre, though)

  1. I can't stand that score, but I figure it must just be my hatred of the celtic film music fad coming to the fore. wink

If you only ever take one piece of advice from me, let it be this - don't buy Patrick Doyle's Jig. If someone gives you a copy, throw it in the bin. It's like an Oirish nightmare, Riverdance crossed with porn music.

I was listening to some of Barry's The Golden Child last night and I didn't really enjoy it that much. I wasn't too keen on the "fantasy electronics" or the use of the saxophone.

The saxophone is a bit like the use of the harmonica in film music: I either love it or hate it.

At least the Barry version is much more enjoyable than the used Colombier score.

"fantasy electronics"? There are hardly any "electronics" in the score. As someone who loves Saxophone and Harmonica this is a win for me.

I think the only things that irritate me in film scoring are Shakazuluwasabi flutes, Duduk's and wailing women in a lamenting Eastern style.

At the same time I like all three of the above but only in very small doses.

Oh, that's a shame, considering how good those two tracks I mentioned are. I can't stand when new age music adds sound effects like rain and bird chirping.

I just tried listening to "Sand dance" on youtube and found it dreadful. Really not the kind of thing I'm interested in. He made several albums though, and from reading online I gather that he had a period where he made rather quiet music, but he should also have written some more dramatic music. I'm sure there must be some other goodies, though I trust you when you say that alot of it isn't very good.

I'm afraid I haven't heard anything by Yanni that I thought was great, it's too 'wishy-washy' for me.

  3. I have several albums by Yanni. Keys to Imagination and In Celebration of Life is my favorite albums (Sand Dance is from In Celebration of Life).

It didn't even occur to me that new age (or newage as I like to call it) belongs in that thread. I've always found modern instrumental music and film music too similar at times to separate them in my mind.

I agree it starts out like that, but when it really gets going after about a minute I think it loses that cheesy, meandering new age sound and simply sounds like a fantastic instrumental piece.

Peter, the Off Topic Now Playing thread is quite simply about ANY music that ISN'T film score related ( though it does sometimes step into that boundary if you consider NP's of John Williams, John Barry, Wojciech Kilar, Vangelis etc of their non-film score albums ), though probably more classical orientated you'll be surprised at what some people play outside of our film score world.
