I was listening to some of Barry's The Golden Child last night and I didn't really enjoy it that much. I wasn't too keen on the "fantasy electronics" or the use of the saxophone.

The saxophone is a bit like the use of the harmonica in film music: I either love it or hate it.

At least the Barry version is much more enjoyable than the used Colombier score.

"fantasy electronics"? There are hardly any "electronics" in the score. As someone who loves Saxophone and Harmonica this is a win for me.

But what I did hear I didn't like.

Fair nuff' I think it's a fantastic score. When you say you heard "some" of it, do you mean you skipped through tracks?

NP : ATLANTIC REALM - Clannad

1989 BBC wildlife documentary series score.

This is a CD I'd "forgotten" ( or, more accurately, hadn't filed on my shelf with/under BBC soundtracks ), this is a really lovely, ambient, textural score with a 'warm' sound to it that I like a lot.

I'm filing this in the correct place now, I'll be returning to this CD.

That is one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever read on MT. I guarantee you that if the title, track titles and album art were different, your reaction would not be the same. There's barely even anything Irish about the music! It's a fantastic little score!

I returned to it sooner than I thought!? I was just starting to think some of the tracks are a bit more than repetitive, they're actually the same tracks! The album only lasts 33 minutes but it immediately returned to track 1 as soon as it finished and I didn't realise until track 6 it was replaying itself, I have a few albums that do this, any idea why some CD's do that???

NP : THE David Whitaker SONGBOOK

As far as I can make out, and the liner notes don't give nothing away, 11 of the 21 tracks are from film scores.

It's an incredibly ecclectic mix from French pop to lounge to brassy 'music to spy by' to beautifully orchestrated easy listening and even 'classical', I love this album and it's become one of the best buys I made this year.

I admit I may have slightly over-egged the pudding! Parts of it are lovely. But there's certainly an Irish brogue throughout (to my ears).

Well, if its just the instruments you dislike, then that's understandable...but the writing is classic Doyle with traces of the Zimmer influence he picked up since being told to write in that vein circa Eragon. I actually found it less "Irish" and more of a straight, traditional Doyle score than I was expecting.

  1. Tim, I'd listened to some of the early tracks and wasn't too keen on it (I'm the sort of listener where the slightest little thing puts me off a whole track). I then went and had a listen to the first track again alongside the equivalent Colombier track. Then I put it all to one side and haven't revisited it yet.

I didn't say I disliked it... I was only recommending avoidance to someone who hates celtic film music. I think it's quite nice.

I'm sorry, I guess I missed that it was directed at one person in particular, I was just skimming through the thread and thought you were just bashing the score in general shame

I don't think there's much I can say to convince you otherwise, you'd have to listen to the whole thing to decide whether there's anything of worth to you? Give track 17 a try? at about the 4.00 minute mark it absolutely soars in a glorious Dances With Wolves like moment for French horns and swelling strings.

NP : THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS - Jerry Goldsmith

Great stuff! I'd buy an expanded of this, there's some really good music missing from the album release.

The good thing about actually owning it is that I will revisit at some point and have a good listen.

La Fille du Puisatier - Alex Desplat

I like it, but it does all sound rather safe territory for him. (And I don't like the source music.)
  3. Don't know why that one works most of all for me of his recent stuff. (And while 4 versions is a bit much, I do love the Caruso aria.)

    NP: THE FURY (John Williams)

Herrmann inspiration or not, Williams doesn't come much better than this. Lovely, "delicious darkness".

NP: Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Patrick Doyle

There are a few solid cues in this but the RC influence is back and I'm bored to shit with it. I'm really fed up with most new film music nowadays. An occasional highlight here and an occasional highlight there. sleep I think I'm going to just concentrate on the old stuff that I love from now on and be a lot more selective in the new stuff I listen to. However, I do have one more new score lined up - Portman's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - which is getting a lot of good buzz - so maybe there is some hope. But as it stands right now there are 3 maybe 4 scores that are worthy of best of 2011 status.

EDIT - I will say that that less action oriented material in Doyle's Ape score is far more satisfying.

I wouldn't go on the ol' "everything is shit nowadays" tangent just because of it, but you're right about the RC influence.

It seems like a cross between Doyle and Zimmer that doesn't have any of those composers' strengths. They both get washed out somewhere in the middle. I don't know what's up with Doyle lately.

Good call, I'm just starting to play it too but I've gone for something rare ( for me ) in that I'm playing the actual soundtrack...

NP : THE FURY - John Williams

I far prefer Williams re-recorded album but as I may have said before, it's great to have both albums included and there's some wonderful stuff on the original film soundtrack.

NP : THREE DECADES OF TV THEMES - Paul Lewis

I've banged on about this album before, simply put IT'S BRILLIANT! Music of the very highest quality, think a British counterpart to Lee Holdridge, that's how good his composing chops are. Many of the tracks are in the form of extended suites which makes this album an exceptionally satisfying listen.

I'm afraid this CD is ALL that's available Erik, I'd highly recommend tracking this down, it must be available as some file somewhere? If not I'll send you a copy when my PC is up and running properly.

p.s. As it's all from British shows from the 1960's to the early 1980's it's probably unlikely you've ever heard anything by him?
