    I don't worry. Why don't you agree ? Out of curiosity, why do we have to have complicated latin numbering? smile And yeah, with the advanced search engine we have in the post-scorereviews era, we can easily have one np topic and search for specific posts.

    I could throw the question back at you and ask why you think that it is "tedious" and "meaningless"? I assume that with the ability to search you can't see a need for the various "now playing" topics? Just have one great big long one and search?

    I suppose I like the use of Roman numerals for nothing more than I think that it looks a bit different - for instance I would not refer to the various Star Trek sequels as Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek 3: The Search For Spock. It's not particularly difficult to follow the numbering system - and if it's difficult to follow and you find it meaningless then the significance of the numbering system doesn't really matter.

    I like the way the number of "now playing" topics has accumulated 39 other threads (notice that I wouldn't write XXXIX - that would just be stupid). And I like the small, bite-sized threads.


    Because you need a frigging online converter to find out what number it is. My oh my us film music geeks are the worst after all ! Emos geeks forever alones AND elitists !

    I am now listening to some Wibi Soerjadi clips on the net, because last night we saw Wibi Soerjadi in concert. It was a really good concert. He started of with Liszt, which is not my cup of tea, so I was worried about the next two hours a bit... Then Bach, the famous piece "Toccata en Fuga", in a special transciption according to Wibi. That was awesome. Then the surprise of the evening for me: a piece Wibi composed for a kur by Anky van Grunsven and her horse for the Olympics. It's called "Dance of Devotion" and I had never heard it before. What Wibi did in this concert was, instead of just playing the music as a kur, he took a theme and played nine variations on that theme. The seconds he started, playing the theme first, I thought... filmmusic! Very very Zimmer & co-like and a great theme and the variations he did were awesome. He could score a movie with that!

    After the intermission he played a composition he composed for his mother, also in nine pieces which he introduced first and he explained about how you can hear different things in the music. The final composition was also composed by Wibi himself, "Apuleius' Amor & Psyche". He tells the whole story musicwise in, how suprising, nine chapters and again, he explained first how he tells what's happening with the music. It was a really good piece, a true story which was indeed easy to follow and his piano performance was impressive as always. A standing ovation obviously.

    The encore was, I guess (don't remember, excuse me), "Ave Maria" in a very Wibi-way, so you can guess what that was like. Then, suprise surprise, he had one more little piece for us. He told about how he likes to make transciptions of film music (like he did with Gladiator) and then he played his Pirates-transcription for one hand. Fun fun fun!!!

    It was a great concert and I immediately started looking for the "Dance of Devotion" music. Unfortunatly the original has some orchestra as well, so on the CD it is piano with strings and stuff... That could be nice of course, but for some reason I really loved his piano version last night. These nine variations of the theme he did were written for concert only and I'm afraid they aren't available on CD (yet?). I will post some clips now:

    Here you can hear "Dance of Devotion" how it was used for the Olympics. It's nice, very heroic. Funny how Maykel and I discussed what it sounded like last night after hearing the piano version. He said Conquest of Paradise, I said The Rock and if you read the comments below you see the same responses. Hearing the strings now I hear some Portman too!

    It's mostly chill music to listen to, but this is much more dramatic. When it turns into the heroic theme, when Simba needs to climb the rock, it's really great!

    Paycheck John Powell

    As much as I love Powell's many animated scores, I'd like to see a non-animated project on his upcoming projects list. He's too good in other genres not to be scoring them. This recently leaked complete version, with a little help from a seasoned album editor, is ample proof of that.

    I'm inclined to agree. Emotionally, something like How To Train Your Dragon or Mars Needs Moms wins. For pure fun, it would be Chicken Run and Evolution.

    But for shear cleverness, Paycheck is his best.

    Paycheck, Cody Banks and Evolution are really what I think his "sound" is. I wish he'd return to it as those the early 00's were a few fantastic years for him.

    Hmm, that's gonna rack my brain. Pretty much anything by Powell, but I've also enjoyed Super 8, Human Target and, um... probably others...? Hasn't been the most exciting year for film music as far as I remember? At least not relative to other years.

    As old scores go, not much I don't think? I've been listening to a lot of non-film music the past year, classical and 'songs' alike. I recently picked up almost all of the Chandos film music albums, which I think is a bit of a treasure trove for fans of older scores. Amazing music that makes for a nice change of pace from modern scores.

    In all fairness, there hasn't been a single year since I can remember where I haven't found at least one score to add to my top scores of all time. Even amongst all the disappointments, that's not too bad.

    You're absolutely right about the Chandos releases being a treasure trove, particularly for under-represented composers, I still have high hopes that they'll record the film scores of Humphrey Searle ( The Haunting, The Abominable Snowman ), an amazing composer.

    I think this last year has been incredibly mediochre but yes, there have been a few worthy efforts. For older releases from the likes of FSM, Intrada, LLL, Kritzerland, Prometheus etc it's been an absolute blinder, at least it has for me.

    The Bourne scores are probably his most influential scores, and for that alone they deserve high praise. But yes, they're excellent as well - but as Anthony points out, Paycheck is more fun.

    Although I'm not sure I'd want to see another Bourne film since the third one ends so well, I'd be happy for another one just for the Powell score.

    Would you agree with me on this?

    Identity is the weakest in the movie and ok on CD.
    Supremacy is the best in the movie and on CD.
    Ultimatum is ok the movie (hacked to death) and the worst on CD, although the complete score rectifies this and boosts it into second place over Identity.
