Why isn't this theme one of Trevor Jones' most loved themes? I never see it mentioned, even though it's sweeping Trevor Jones magic up there with the themes from Merlin and Cleopatra.

Thank you for this one Peter. I love Jones very much. Very moving themes and instrumentation. I thought of Aegis a couple of times. Although this one is much sweeter than Aegis.

Indeed it reminds me of Aegis, beautiful theme, Trevor Jones knows how to write great themes.

NP: WAR HORSE - JOHN WILLIAMS

    Very impressive.

Not sure about the film though. According to the poster the First World War featured "infrequent moderate battle violence".

I read some very negative things about the film; i.e. that if you don't jizz over the idea of horses, or actual horses themselves, it's not for you.

Actually, the issue some audience are having is the the entire film is throw back to the Golden Age. Very old fashioned, heart on its sleeve, classic filming techniques. If this was made in the 50's then John Ford would have made it!

    -Erik-

This isn't bad for me at all; what i read is the critique above. Over-melodramatic and exaggerating on all things horses.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

And Insurrection is a fine score.

Not really. It does have some highlights... mainly the more tender/romantic moments - "New Sight" is the scores highlight - but from an action stand point it's pretty dull and again uninspired. It's just pounds away at you with endless references to that awful US Marshals action motif. Almost as irritating as Horner's four-note danger motif.

    -Erik-

Well my tolerance for certain 'irritating' things that my favourite composers have done is pretty high, and it gets only higher as I get older and grow more reminiscent about the good old days.

Otherwise said, I'm stuck in the past, and you're not. tongue smile

But seriously, saying Insurrection's action music is dull and uninspired when we're being bombarded every couple of months by generic as hell Brian Tyler action music is stretching it.

I'm not afraid to admit I love Insurrection's action music and I will continue to do so for eternity. And Tyler can keep coming up with the same shit for all I care.

Yes, Tyler's music is headache inducing but that still doesn't take away from my opinion that Goldsmith action material for Insurrection (and even worst Nemesis) was stuck in paint by colors mode. And no, that paint by numbers Goldsmith isn't better that the majority of the stuff we get today. Far from it!

  1. There are rocks named Brian Tyler?
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.

I can't remember the last time I heard action music I liked as much as either US Marshals or Insurrection. In fact it probably hasn't happened since the last time Jerry Goldsmith wrote action music. Personal tastes, I guess. His later stuff is largely guilty pleasure material for me, admittedly - I know it's miles and miles behind his best, but enjoy it anyway.

One of my JNH personal favourites. I don't own all the Shyamalan scores I'd like to own (I still have to get The Village), but this one is amazing.

On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt
  6. I bought it during my first trip to London 4 years ago and I always loved it before I finally bought it. Keeping with a Jerry Goldsmith mood (listened to First Blood before), I decided for this one.

I have just finished a script that I applied to a contest with and I am avoiding the material that I used to write the script while listening to (Schindler's List, Gladiator for an action sequence in the end, The House of the Spirits, Dances with Wolves), I just need a rest from those associations.

Why? When someone says that no one has written better action music since 2004... then yeah, that's shocking and flat out INSANE!!!

whoops... I use the "i" word again. I wonder if you know who is lurking near by?

Some good stuff there, Erik! The second one on your list made me change my mind.

The Wrath of God - Lalo Schifrin

    Brilliant south-of-the-border action score.
  10. NP: Man To Man - Patrick Doyle

Nice to hear the old Doyle sound again. And I love the main theme.
