  1. It is too long and there's something about the main theme that I don't like. A bit disappointing after the positive comments I heard.

NP: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - Thomas Newman

I like Skyfall but I think this is his better score from this year. Love it.

Assault On The Senses is one of the best pieces he's written in a long time.

    cool

Too long and too much mickey-mousing, the good parts are rather obscured. Certainly not on the same level as his HP scores. But it could just be my mood.

I think it is superb! One of my very favourite Desplat scores and one of the best scores of the year!

NP: FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS/GOLDEN EARRINGS/OMAR KHAYAAM (Victor Young)

A single disc containing three scores. It's sweet and lovely, with lots of rubato and some exotic elements. Some parts remind me of Rozsa, others of Alfred Newman. Though once I've heard it through, I need something a little more gritty.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. Omar Khayaam is one of Young's best.

(Nice to see Khayaam's brother, Victor, do so well in men's grooming products.)

No to the first statement, but Yes to the second. That cue is classic Newman.

Nah, barbecue sauce is better than Rise of the Guardians wink Wasn't too excited about this score and i certainly didn't like his Reality score either. Not a very good Desplat year for me.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Lee, make sure you watch the movie! Exotic Marigold Hotel is such a well-spirited and heartwarming film!

Superb electronic score, one of the best of the 80's.

    NP: Thundercats - Kevin Kliesch

Magic! Bold and epic scoring from a very talented composer that I hope to hear a lot more from in the future.
Predominantly synthetic orchestra that sounds huge all the same produces musical nods to grand scoring from the seventies and eighties in powerhouse fashion. Right up my ally!
I hear Williams, Shore and Horner in the mix but not in blatant lazy rip off fashion. More a tip of the hat respect from a composer who grew up loving these composers' music.
I love hearing nods to Krull in a couple of spots too (that won me over)!
I only wish there were more quiet, reflective moments inserted a little more often to break up all the action.
It's musically a fun, high quality ride for a fine cartoon show!

I'm assuming that you have heard the score MANY MANY time now. IS there a theme beside what's in Severine? I don't count the JAC Redford arrangement. Honestly, I don't even remember a single cue from that score.

Nothing in the traditional sense. Newman doesn't really do themes per se; he'll come up with certain motifs or musical ideas and revisit them throughout.

Another cue that I'm fixated on is "Adrenaline", a longer and more elaborate version of "Shanghai Drive."
  7. Adrenaline? It sounds like a reject from Streitenfeld's Body of Lies!

    My favourite is New Digs.

I did like how he took a bit of the Bond theme and played around with it. But I'm really missing something to grab onto within the score.
  9. I think in this case, as with most of his music, the total package is more important than any one standout cue. Which might be why I'm often not comfortable picking one track for a favorite...

I gave SKYFALL another listen the other day and it's still anonymous, I was so looking forward to this and so wanted it to be good but I really haven't warmed to it at all, it's meant to be a Bond score but sounds more like a luke-warm BOURNE score. I'm retiring this score for now and I'll come back to it at a later date, I've changed my opinions in the past so who knows?

Exotic Marigold Hotel is my favourite Newman score this year, I'm a sucker for Indian flavours. cool

Aaaaaaand so we're back to SKYFALL. Incidentally, I agree with Timmer. I kinda liked it when I first played it, but it's one of the rare cases where the appreciation has gone down after repeated listenings. It really DOES sound like a lukewarm BOURNE score that goes neither here nor there. Still haven't seen the film, though, so an evaluation of that has to wait.

    NP: LOS BORGIA (Angel Illaramendi)

Except for the grating suspense cues, this is a marvelously beautiful score.
    I am extremely serious.

  11. NP: The Omega Man - Ron Grainer

This is such an excellent score. Great themes, at times very tender and with some innovative instrumental effects too!
