Well, I assumed so. Is it not?

I quite like this, but I'm not sure about the rather odd synth effect that sounds half like an air raid siren and half like Jerry Goldsmith's "cat" synth in Gremlins.

It's the most distinct and original aspect of the score and I love it!

Absolutely loved the siren! It is so creepy!
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    Wild China - Barnaby Taylor

Outstanding! I had no idea this had been released until I saw a comment at FSM. Its east-meets-west blend is beautiful.

Spotify is great to sample a composers work. Now and then you discover a gem like this one. Spectacular! Grand music and a fantastic triumphant main theme.

NP: MEN IN BLACK III (Danny Elfman)

I need to give this a few more chances, noisy or not.
    I am extremely serious.

I haven't heard that whole score, but what I have heard from it was fantastic. I'll have to look into it!
  3. NP - WILD CHINA - Barnaby Taylor

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, James!

I'd come back to the clips for this several times over the last few months but I am not keen on what I've heard of the clips of this: there's too much emphasis on the eastern aspects of the score here (though I am not anti-eastern in general).

But your reminder to me of Taylor had be searching for anything else he has done and I came across a TV documentary score from 2009 he did with Ben Salisbury: Nature's Great Events:

More in the same vein as George Fenton, this is much more to my liking.

I wasn't so sure about this in the show itself but it grew on me as the series progressed and it's absolutely exquisite on album.

People should definitely take not of this one

As thy words proclaim, I shall partake not of this.
    wink

NP: Russland (Im Reich der Tiger, Bären und Vulkane) - Kolja Erdmann

Apparently this is the score for a documentary on the inhospitable and unyielding Russian natural world. Haven't seen it, but the score stands solid as a rock! Strong melody lines and a huge orchestral sound augmented with ominous and appropriately Russian-ish choral passages serve to create an excellent wall of sound that really hits the spot!
There's nothing subtle or fragile about this work (and in this at times it resembles some of the work from the RC ventures, but in the best possible way as there's no pre-cooked or uninspired aspect about this work).

I'm enjoying the dickens out of this!

It's a shame it's pretty hard to get, and that -once you find it- it's pretty darn expensive.
    But it's worth it!

Although I didn't watch the programme, I see that Barnaby Taylor has composed the music for the BBC's new documentary series, Wild Arabia.

  7. Life of Pi (Danna) for obvious reasons.

And now Jesus liebt mich / Jesus loves me (Barsotti) Man, I LOVE THIS SCORE!

    Skyfall - Thomas Newman

Unusually, given how long I've had it and how many times I've listened to it, I still like this more and more each time and find more and more buried within it on each listen. Has now probably overtaken Bourne Ultimatum as my favourite post-Goldsmith action score and is probably now my favourite non-Barry James Bond score.

I still can't justify how I'd put it above any of Arnold's work, but I have listened to it more than anything he did.

Newman's approach is just so different to Arnold's, I find it hard to compare the two. I don't think I can put it above Powell's score, but I do think it is at least along side the Bourne scores, as equals. I love it. I'm still surprised at how well Newman pulled it off.

Don't listen to too many action scores, do ya James?

I mean, Skyfall's good but better than Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale? Nah!

Skyfall's an adequate action score. I'd rather listen to the action material in Casino Royale. Have never heard Tomorrow Never Dies.

Make sure that's the next score you listen to! Tomorrow Never Dies is excellent, but I think my favourite Arnold Bond score is The World Is Not Enough...even if it's just for that boat chase track. cool

I found there is The Dark Knight Rises theatrical re-release in a theater until this friday (I missed it last summer).
I'm thinking if I should go to see it or not... now this score is making me feel doing so...

    NP: STOKER (Clint Mansell)

Interesting things going on here. Ambient, with occasional beats, but less gritty and more "open" and delicate. I like it.

If you paid attention to all the love Mansell-lovers are giving this on Twitter/Facebook then you'd think that it was the greatest score written in 2013.

From the clips it seems to be a reasonable ambient score.

Probably not to your taste, Alan (knowing what you've felt re: previous scores in the same overall category), but it's definitely to mine! I don't know about best score of 2013, though. Need some more time to evaluate that.

  10. Poltergeist II - Jerry Goldsmith

A uses copy arrived in the mail today and I'll check it out tonight. I read quite divergent opinions about it and I am curious to find out for myself. It's so long ago that I saw the film that I barely remember anything about it.

The only thing I remember about is the hotel room with Carol Anne in the beginning. And then when they walk through the mirror, they end up in a parking garage or something?

Like you, it's been many, many years since I saw it.
