  1. For me, Varese's 'Deluxe Edition' makes for a much more enjoyable listen: almost makes it feel like a different score!

It has been a while since I listened to Poltergeist II: The Other Side but the expanded version has a choral element that is missing from the original, shorter version.

  2. Anyone heard John Ottman's Jack The Giant Killer that was released by Watertower Music today?

It's been getting good buzz! Filmtracks gave it a 5 out of 5 rating.

    Of course it is.

I remember a friend who has little interest in film music telling me I'd really enjoy this score, he'd just seen the film at the cinema ( he must have commited an awful sin in a former life ) and he has this warped idea that I'll like any music if it comes from a film, it doesn't matter how many times I've tried to make him understand, he still thinks like this. rolleyes

He loves heavy rock. I keep suggesting really luke-warm bands to him as they come on the scene ( Keane, Coldplay and their like ) as stuff he'll love.

That's good: I got the deluxe edition.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  4. Good indeed! When I was writing this I was worried that you only had the original.

Don't listen to too many action scores, do ya James?

I mean, Skyfall's good but better than Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale? Nah!

    -Erik-

I listen to action scores pretty frequently! There's nothing wrong with either of those scores - I just like Skyfall more. I've probably already listened to it more than Tomorrow Never Dies and I've had 15 more years to listen to that one.

    Poltergeist II - Jerry Goldsmith

A uses copy arrived in the mail today and I'll check it out tonight. I read quite divergent opinions about it and I am curious to find out for myself. It's so long ago that I saw the film that I barely remember anything about it.

The only thing I remember about is the hotel room with Carol Anne in the beginning. And then when they walk through the mirror, they end up in a parking garage or something?

Like you, it's been many, many years since I saw it.

isn't that Poltergeist III? the thing with the mirrors and the parking garage does vaguely remind of the third, while the second one still centers around their house
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  6. I love 'Skyfall', I've listened to it a lot but like James I seem to appreciate it more with every listen, I think it's an incredibly rich piece of work. I really like the romantic music in 'Casino Royale' but the action stuff just doesn't really do much for me. Arnold's action writing hasn't really excited me since his brilliantly over the top music for 'Independence Day' and 'Godzilla'.
  7. Robin of Sherwood - Clannad, 1984

When I was a teenage boy I got enthralled in the HTV/Goldcrest production of "Robin of Sherwood" starring Michael Praed in the leading role.

The enchanting score by Clannad is still one of my most played scores.

Now, the score has never been released under the series' name. Most of the music is to be found on the album "Legend", one additional cue on "Macalla" (Caislean Oir). There has been, though, a vinyl single at least in Germany titled "Robin Hood" featuring the theme song. I created a playlist using the art work of that single.

If you are pure of heart next time you walk in the forrest Herne the Hunter may entrust you with one of the Seven Swords of Wayland. smile

I really like Skyfall as well. I put it in my top 5 of 2012 but the energy and creativity of Arnold's action music is unmatched in the Bond universe, IMO, with "Miami International" being one of the best action cues written in the past 8-10 years!

I must go back and give the whole album a listen, admittedly in the last year or two I've just skipped straight to the more romantic music, time for a re-evaluation I think!

I do like the action music for Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace, but I don't enjoy it as much as his previous Bond scores. It's too aggressive. Maybe it's just the recording, but that sound that I automatically associate with Bond is gone and only appears in the quieter cues.

Oh, the recordings are shit on Solace and Royale. I'll give you that. But the whiling brass in Arnold's action music is a Bond staple.

It's tiny, lots of mid range, almost zero bass. Too bad really because Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough sound great!

Yes, that's a point. Die Another Day has a pretty lousy recording too. But the style of writing I was talking about is still definitely present there (take for example the strings throughout the escape from that weird Cuban clinic.)

It's a mixed bag: Parts of it sound like they had been composed by Kitaro while others remind me of Miklos Rozsa. The choral parts are really great, though.

Just finished with Jack The Giant Slayer. Here's my first impression.

It's a big, bold, complex, action packed epic score but I'm not really getting a grasp on the melodies. I know they are there but I'm not really identifying with them when they show up. A lot of the score is based more on thick, textured orchestrations and creating a certain atmosphere then latching onto a melodic hook. The melodies are there... there's a big heroic tune for Jack - I mean, Ottman slams you in the head with it right of the top of the album but it's so scattered throughout the lengthly running time of the album that when it (and other melodies) eventually show up you're racking your brain as to what character it might belong to. A viewing of the film will help in this department.

The temp track bleeds through a bit... try listening to "Goodbyes" and NOT think of "Labor of Love" from Star Trek. Or Goldsmith's "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" from Twilight Zone: The Movie when you hear "Kitchen Nightmare."

Anyway, I'd say that fans of Elfman's epic "Alice in Wonderland" and Shore's original "The Lord of the Rings" music will love this to bits. There's some phenomenal writing in the score (especially the last two battle cues and the finale) but I think I will enjoy even more more with repeat listens so I can get my head around the thematic development in the score. I think a trim down of the album is in order as well.

This is easily one of Ottman's best scores!

    Oh, great recording, too!
