    Like most composers these days, he doesn't bother to write long cues that have structure anymore. It's just a bunch of really short cues that are stitched together. I guess it's easier to work with them in post but it makes the music really dull, to my ears.

    I'm rather warming to Tyler recently.
  4. To be honest, that's an album I didn't get through in full and got rid of... I definitely thought that the theme is a Jablonsky wannabe and worse at that, but also I thought for some reason that compared to other Tyler works, the orchestrations were subpar.

    As much as my favourite Tyler score (except Far Cry 3) remains Eagle Eye, I think my favourite orchestrations of his are actually in Expendables 2.

    Btw, did you know that JNH is scoring the sequel to The Hunger Games? I didn't know until just a moment ago. The movie is called Catching Fire. An appropriate title if this should happen to my interest for the score too!

    By the way, I have it on good authority that JNH is scoring the next HUNGER GAMES film, in case some of you didn't know.


    I liked the score to Hunger Games, i laughed my ass off with the movie; i also loved his Snowhite and the Huntsman score (and movie) and i truly think it's one of the best scores of 2012.

    I think the existing release from Epic is fine in terms of cue selection and presentation, but I agree that the sound quality leaves a little to be desired.

    Yes. There's been no legal release as of yet of the full score. Who knows what PR will find/have found, as they go through the masters.

  19. NP: The Fog - John Carpenter

    What I love most about this score is the bleak eeriness of the simple piano motif. Less is definitely more in this case. I remember the when I had the original LP that the tracks sort of lost their way a bit towards the end: there was a bit too much soundscape ambience, but the piano motif is a killer.

    This is the 2-CD expanded version from Silva I'm listening to, which has the opening ghost story music without John Houseman's narration - though the track with his telling of the story is one of the few examples where dialogue works a treat.

  26. NP: The Time Machine by Russell Garcia GNP Crescendo 8008

    This is IMHO one of the most importand and beautiful orchestral science fiction scores ever. If you also love the film as ardently as I do, the score is a bliss!

    Now, if I understand matters correctly this is a re-recording and it's not the same as what FSM would release later.

    The liner notes do not give any clear statement about this.

    The credits say:
    (c) 1960 Loew inc. / Galaxy Films. Now, this is the year the film was released.
    It also says:
    (c)(p) 1987 Talking Rings Record Company
    And finally:
    "Digital Recording"

    This is all quite confusing. For the recording does not sound like a digital recording made in 1987, but distincltly older.

    I don't own the FSM album.
    Can anyone please clarify?

    I see. It is a re-recording made in Germany (!) in 1987. Would not have thought that. Why did GNP not tell me in the liner notes? Why do I still not know, what orchestra I am listening to? Some cues sound old because they are. But which ones? Arrrgh!!

  27. Yes, the GNP Crescendo version of The Time Machine is a re-recording. One that was actually re-scored by Garcia himself for the re-recording:

    And comparing the track lengths of the two versions, tracks like "Reminiscing" - that have significant differences in their lengths - suggest that the GNP Crescendo and FSM versions are different.
