  1. NP: Solaris 1972: Edward Artemiev / 2002: Cliff Martinez

The 1972 tracks are taken from the album "Tarkovsky par Artemiev" (milan).

The 2002 film is not a remake of the 1972 one. Its another adaptation of the novel by Lem rather. Even so I like how much the Martinez score echos the Artemiev one stylistically. Two great scores!
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

As for the first score, it's a true 5 star classic. I have the anniversary album, which I assume is a pretty complete presentation of the score. Love every note.

Have you heard the original, 12-track MCA version? This is also an excellent album.

It's the one that I love. My memory plays tricks on me these days but I'm pretty sure this was the very first soundtrack album I bought. Yes, I'd bought Goldfinger and Ennio Morricone compilations etc but Jaws was the first score I bought to a brand new film release, in fact I rushed to the record store first chance I got after seeing the film twice at the cinema ( with seriously long queues ) smile

    NORTH BY NORTHWEST?!!!

Compare the NORTHWEST overture to the JAWS main theme.

I think JAWS clearly references PSYCHO and NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

I get the Psycho bit but North By Northwest???

You need to be much more specific for me to get this.

  4. Much more specific?

John Williams' Jaws and Bernard Herrmann's North By Northwest.

    wink

I like Jaws 2, but I don't love it. Even though it's essentially a more epic version of the first score, there's something missing about it which doesn't quite match up to the original?

I would suggest that what is missing is a good film. wink

That the first 20 seconds of the Herrmann overure sound like JAWS.

I think any similarity is accidental. Why would he homage North By Northwest in a film about a fish?

I can't hear it. In fact, I hear very little Herrmann in JAWS (unless you count the ideology of utilizing motivic clusters as opposed to long-line melodies).

Now THE FURY and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK, on the other hand...
    I am extremely serious.

I can hear it, but I agree with Timmer, it's probably coincidental.

I'm still wondering how Super 8 sounds like Williams!
  7. That Jaws is influenced by Stravinsky, though, now that I can definitely hear.

It doesn't sound like JW. It sounds like Giacchino paying tribute to JW, at least in parts. It's the orchestration, the musical storytelling. To me the score has that feel.

Great score, but of the songs I only like the one by The Cure.

What, not even "Release the Pressure" by Leftfield? That's my favourite of the songs on that album -- an eternal classic.

  10. That's right. That one too.

  11. All I remember about the Judge Dredd songs is that one of them is by a band called The The. I always thought that was a typo. biggrin
  12. NP: John Carpenter Greatest Hits Vol. I

Hm ... frankly I was never the biggest fan of Carpenter's self scoring. What about you?

Well, I think the music usually works very well in context and gives it a very unique "auteur" stamp in terms of audiovisuals. But as far as soundtracks are concerned, I usually only like the themes -- I can't listen to his full albums, even if they are rearranged to my preference.
    I am extremely serious.
  13. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Hans Zimmer and the superfriends

While perhaps not quite as flat-out entertaining as The Lone Ranger, this is certainly the most innovative and varied we've heard Zimmer be in a long time. Between those two and Rush I'd say my faith in the man has been fully restored following his highly disappointing 2011-2012 output. "My Enemy" is so bizarrely outlandish that it has absolutely no business being as addictive as it is. smile

    Homeward Bound - Jerry Goldsmith

I don't think this sounds like North by Northwest at all, or even Stravinsky.

Wonderful little western score. Great theme.
