Joking aside Mel oppresses nothing on me. Though it does mean that when I cook I work around things, for example, if I'm cooking roast potatoes they'll be cooked in Sunflower oil and not animal fat but to be honest that ain't no big deal.

Oh sweet lord, you've been completely brainwashed. Roast potatoes in sunflower oil being NO BIG DEAL!?!?!? Are you COMPLETELY mad? Roast potatoes need goose fat (if in an extravagant mood) or beef dripping (if not). NOTHING else is remotely acceptable. I wouldn't serve roast potatoes in sunflower oil to the dog.

This is the first time I'm hearing of cooking roast potatoes in that kind of fatty stuff. Is this a Brit thing or are you just kidding, James?
Us vegetarians use simple vegetable oil for it. Together with Indian spices it tastes great and that's enough for me.

For PERFECT roast potatoes there is NO OTHER WAY than to cook them in some meaty juice....FACT!

I do, but frankly I'd rather live for 40 years and enjoy every day than live for 80 years and not be able to enjoy the finer things in life. Proper roast potatoes are most certainly one of the finer things in life.

I'm sure I'll feel very differently when I'm older (if I get that far!)
  3. I'd see the concern if it was goose fat-roasted potatoes every single day, but having this delicacy just every so often isn't so bad.

    Everything in moderation smile

Maybe I'll tell everyone how to cook PERFECT roast potatoes sometime wink

And yes James, for perfection they do NEED animal fat.

    They do not.
There's a perfectly good reason why people think they do, though, and McDonalds has made a mint out of it: the smell of animal fat (and indeed that aroma seeping into the item being fried) has an appetite-increasing effect.

It even goes so far as McDonalds -when forced with having to phase out the incredibly unhealthy animal fat- now having started to use chemical additives to emulate the smell and taste of animal fat.

So it's definitely not needed for a perfect roast.
In fact, it's not only not perfect, it is downright bad.
But your body is working overtime trying to convince you it isn't.

While I deeply love good food (and surely that may be rich once in a while too), this is the sort of cooking that will shave years of your life expectancy, so I'm steering well clear. (It probably helps that in mainland Europe we're not all that used to really rich foods: things like "double cream" are complete unknowns here.)

    As indeed I also said.

Also, you've taken my comment out of context, I'm talking about making perfect roast potatoes, nothing to do with McDonalds, animal fat ( preferably goose ) heats at a higher temperature than vegetable oil and THAT'S what makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
