PS I LOVE YOU | john powell

I really like the main theme. In fact, Powell always adds a catchy melody to his romantic comedy scores. (The one from Gigli sticks forever!) This is a cute score with some very nice cues. Soft strings, xylophone thingies, sometimes a woodwinds and obviously light guitars are the key elements. In its genre, it's defenitely more interesting than the usual stuff. I especially like the variation of the theme in 1st Letter for example. Pure Powell!

Nothing particularly inspired, nothing particularly original... but it is very lovely! kiss

Kung Fu Panda John Powell & Hans Zimmer

So much fun, one of my favourites from this year without a doubt. Particularly great when playing online with GTA! I keep singing along with it down the microphone.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Hero". That's my favourite. As is "Training Po".
  1. NP: Beyond Rangoon - Hans Zimmer

THE perfect companion piece to KFP if you want to stay within the atmosphere, but need to relax from its power. I expect to return to KFP after that. ^^

That is GORGEOUS! So romantic, so full of life and melody, such a memorable, sweet theme, that score has everything innit, i completely fell for it from listen no.1. Sorry to see so few people actually bothering to give it the spins it deserves. This is where i'd put Powell's true spirit btw, in this kind of films / music which i overall find way more inspired and full of vigor than the usual mickey-mousing we get during the last 2 years.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I'm a big fan of this also. Very nice laidback listen.

NP: The Man In The Moon - James Newton Howard

A gorgeous, although hardly ever mentioned, early score from James' career which never fails to move me. You can tell that 1991 was the year he really found his feet in the film scoring business with other fantastic efforts such as Grand Canyon and the equally lovely The Prince Of Tides.

First Listen. Sounds good and a bit like John Powell.

Wait 'till you get the to latter part of the score, toward the end. You're in for big surprises wink

My first listen is finished. The score sounds indeed like Powell.

LOL! This is too funny cheesy
The only track that I listened to from Fools Gold reminded me of MV/RCP. I have not listened to Fenton on action mode though but it did sadden me a bit to hear Fenton do this.
I know Bob says that it is still Fenton's style but... sad

Running through Indy 4 again, and it is still a strong Williams score. Even with Williams's more modern scoring apparent (such as in "Hidden Treasure..." where John Williams rips off his own temp-track from WOTW midway through), it is still an Indy score through and through.

It still doesn't hold a candle to the brilliance of the first two scores though (I'm crossing my fingers for a separate re-release of Temple), albeit it is a more inspired effort than the pitiful third entry.

    I did!!!

    " Hero - A great Overture"

But the whole score is so perfect that you can't say every track! seriously! From the main themes, to the pure Chinese arrengements to the music edited in the soundtrack.

Addicted to....track 8 from 0:00 to 3:00 ( i find some Zimmer moments, ala "lord Pirate of Singapore"

Anyone can make an analysis track by track with the themes?

  3. I think KOTCS makes a great album, but the score in the film lacks the goosebumps moments of the other Indy scores.

    What problems???

About Indy, try to put the tracks in the chronological order. The music is weak , but at least the experience is better.

NP:KUng Fu panda (Zimmer and powell)

The really authentic Zimmer moments Wich I hear are:

Dragon Warrior is Amongs us: Lord Of pirate of Singapore orchestrations.

Tai lung Scapes : this kind of Polar BEar 2 tension music, and with this Horns thirlls from POTC3.

Sacreed pools of tears: His kind of epic.

Dragon Scroll: like in thunderbirds, using electronics for his lack of orchestral pallete.

    Oogway Ascends: His theme

Powell's endless ripping off of his own themes. Mickey-mousing. Percussion that always sounds like Powell.

Zimmer's distinct lack of knowledge of the treble cleff. His total inability to write action music that doesn't focus around a 6 note bass line.

    That's just for starters.

You are going too fast in your movie music fan evolution. Seriously, Try to enjoy more this kind of things you said above: they are what makes a great the composers, because they are not perfect.

How do problems that composers never seem to improve upon make them good?

And I'd probaly give KFP 3 out of 5. wink

It's enjoyable, but will I be listening to it again in a month? Probably not.

Hmmm....really? I could say the same about 99% of composers. That´s why every composer in the world has his OWN style (which includes orchestrations, melody, rythm, etc).

    Anthony wrote
    Mickey-mousing.

    shocked
You really think there is a lot of mickey mousing in Kung Fu Panda?? Because if something has surprised me of this score is the lack of it (fortunately there´s much more asian / action / epic / dramatic music than mickey mousing).

Well of course....he is John Powell....can´t change his way of composing in every score!

Oh I listen some really good action music writing here, as I did in At World´s End last year.

You know what's fecking great about this action score? It's MELODIC. Action scores just aren't written like this anymore. I hope Giacchino has a similiar approach for his Trek score (I have faith in that guy he'll do the right thing wink).
