If you like T Newman, you should. It's very different from Finding Nemo - much more striking and bold, but not so smooth round the edges. I think it's very fine (but this is admittedly based on only one listen).

And after my first listen this is what I thought
    http://www.maintitles.net/forum/discuss … v/#Item_11

Oh ya... Finding Nemo still is just a "meh" album. Newman isn't the greatest album producer. And if there is one composer that I DON'T want to hear complete or really long album from it's him. His music fits the film like a glove but doesn't translate will on CD.

    -Erik-

I used to think a bit like that but I've changed my mind now. Actually I think he is the greatest album producer. The way he sequences them I think is very impressive. I'd lose a couple of bits of Wall-E to make it a slightly tighter listen, but in general I don't think many other film composers are as good as him at making the best album from their music.

Yikes. That's all I'm going to say... YIKES!

  1. I probably tend to agree with Erik a little bit. With Newman, it's usually after the film that I enjoy his albums the most. ANGELS IN AMERICA was one where I remember liking the music before seeing the film, but in the case of LITTLE CHILDREN, GOOD GERMAN, FINDING NEMO they all really took off for me once I'd seen the music against the film. But that's true of a lot of film music by my favourites. The scores that work the best in advance for me are the more traditionally melodic scores with extended theme passages (ATONEMENT, LUST CAUTION, MEMOIRS, etc), and ANGELS and ROAD TO PERDITION both have this feature.

I do look forward to hearing WALL-E though. I somehow stumbled onto this score today.

  2. And I've now listened to WALL-E. Interesting, but I think it won't take shape for me until I see the film.

And now I've moved on to Kamen's BRAZIL. I love the use of the 'Brazil' song... I can tell I'm going to be singing that song around the house for the next week. punk

Of course I understand it's not very motivating if you get low response to your posts about the music you really like, but again, I think if people give up because they are afraid there is no interest in their music then what they fear will actually happen, that music will disappear from the board. You can keep interest alive yourself...

This is the point that stuck out most for me. I don't expect enthusiastic comments for every single "obscure" score I might post in the NP or Recent Purchase topic, and it is great to see some positive comments from people on scores that I have mentioned and they have gone out and listened to themselves, but it is a bit demoralising when CD after CD is mentioned without comment (positive or negative) and the volume posts seem to concentrate on well-trodden topics.

I do find myself skipping most of the NP topic as it's probably going to be some RV-related waffle...

Great comments, Bregje. They certainly gave me a different perspective on things. kiss

    NP: Becoming Colette (John Scott)

This is the sort of music that makes me want to be a melodramatic actress in a soap opera. Magnificent, romantic, lush -- a nice score to play on a day when you feel like listening to Rozsa's Diane, Rombi's Angel or John Williams' Jane Eyre.

Those three are all next on my playlist.

Segunda Piel main theme is gourgeous, it reminds me Goldsmith string composition.

Between these scores my order of preference are : Alatriste, Segunda Piel, The machinist and far away las 13 rosas (the 4 first notes of the main themes are identical to a spanish traditional song, so I always find this a little bit annoying ).

NP: Dinosaur - James Newton Howard

I play it almost everyday nowadays... a very beautiful score by JNH with great themes. I don't think there's a single track on the OST I don't like, but my favourites are The Egg Travels, The Courtship, The End Of Our Island, Raptors/Stand Together, Across The Desert, The Cave, The Carnotaur Attack, Breakout and Epilogue.

The tracks on the "complete" version like The Attack, Playing Monster, Raptors/Meeting The Herd, Enough For everyone and Dead End are also terrific.

    Hulk Danny Elfman

From what I've heard of the new Incredible Hulk score, it's not a scratch on Danny Elfman's. I even enjoy the film quite a lot.

The descending 6 note motif first heard in 'Main Titles' works so well in the movie, Elfman has a knack for scoring visuals like few composers do. This is what makes him so good at scoring titles in movies.

NP: Lord Of The Rings - The Return of The King Complete Recordings - Howard Shore

I don't know how I could live without the Complete Recordings of this one, I'm totally addicted to it! I'm ever so grateful to Warner/Reprise Records for releasing the completes, this is the best out of the three IMO. Each and every track on the discs are worth several listens, my most favourite tracks are -

Disc 1 - Roots and Beginnings, The Grace of Undomiel, A Coronet of Gold and SilverThe Lighting of the Beacons

Disc 2 - Osgilliath Invaded, The Sacrifice of Faramir, Anduril - Flame of The West, Master Meriadoc - Swordthain, The Siege of Gondor, Shelob's Lair, Merry's Simple Courage

Disc 3 - Grond - The Hammer of The Underworld, The Battle of the Pelennor Fields, The Pyre of Denethor, The Mumakil, Dernhelm in Battle, A Far Green Country, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, The Tower of Cirith Ungol, The Mouth of Sauron, For Frodo

Disc 4 - EVERY SINGLE TRACK

    An amazing experience!! punk

NP: Blood Diamond - James Newton Howard

There is some aggressive material on the album which is not as listenable, but you an make a great playlist out of the more melodic cues that are really pleasant and soothing - great music to unwind to (Blood Diamond Titles, Archer & Solomon Hike, Maddy & Archer, Goodbyes, Your Mother Loves You, Thought I'd Never Call, London, Solomon Vandy).

NP: The Themes From THE WORLD HERITAGE Complete - Yuji Toriyama

This album is often classified as jazz/fusion music (Toriyama is not a film composer), but all these music were written for a long-running documentary program. The opening theme The Song Of Life has really memorable, grand melody! 6 versions are on this album, but I never get tired of it. cool

Here're some clips of the main theme: http://www.sonymusicshop.jp/detail.asp? … C000010001

SEGUNDA PIEL is a great score. But to me it's more a Morricone-style melody it sounds like, not a Goldsmith one. (Particularly with that rolling piano rhythm.)

The opening eight minutes of the film - which covers the first two album tracks - are a really fine musical overture. This score was unnecessarily criticised at the time. punk

    NP: Lover's Prayer (McNeely)

Very beautiful, romantic score. A nice score to listen to alongside Desplat's Luzhin Defense.

I never commented on this one. IMHO, this could be McNeely's best score. I think it's a hidden gem that I'm sure a lot of people around here haven't heard. Sure, McNeely is known for his John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bruce Broughtonesque adventure music but this intimate score is easily one of his most original, emotional, and personal scores. A score that was obviously crafted with loving care and compassion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A personal compilation of gigantic, epic film music edited together in custom suites. I just finished with Christopher Gordon's superb Mody Dick and have moved on to Graeme Revell's under rated Mighty Morphin Power Rangers This is epic music we rarely here from Revell.

My personal Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Fantasy End Credits) and Warriors of Virtue suites are up next and afterwards I'm going to give McNeely's Lovers Prayer a spin!

NP: Lovers Prayer - Joel McNeely

Good lord, I forgot how absolutely awesome this score is. I mean, I gave it a lot of praise above but this is really McNeely's best effort. From the trickling piano in the "Main Title" to the lush strings heard during the "Reunion." This is fine, FINE film music. And the piano Nocturne at the end of the disc. Wow... just wow! A classy and incredibly mature score.

NP: Various Works of Christopher Gordon

Inspried by Steven's post I thought I'd listen to some music from I think one of most under appreciated composers around.... maybe not in Australia but at least in Hollywood circles. He is clearly one of the most gifted composers out there.

I'm currently spinning his fabulous score from the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Later I'll be listening to his work from the Rugby World Cup featuring one of my all time favorite themes. And then I'll be listening to sections from On The Beach, his delightful score to the stop motion animated short, Ward 13 and the complete score album to Salem's Lot which I don't think I've given a complete listen. So much genuinely GREAT music coming up!
