NP: Various Works of Christopher Gordon

Inspried by Steven's post I thought I'd listen to some music from I think one of most under appreciated composers around.... maybe not in Australia but at least in Hollywood circles. He is clearly one of the most gifted composers out there.

I'm currently spinning his fabulous score from the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Later I'll be listening to his work from the Rugby World Cup featuring one of my all time favorite themes. And then I'll be listening to sections from On The Beach, his delightful score to the stop motion animated short, Ward 13 and the complete score album to Salem's Lot which I don't think I've given a complete listen. So much genuinely GREAT music coming up!

    -Erik-

His music for the Melbourne Olympics is one of my favourite works by any composer, quite a personal "score" to me.

I'm currently listening to Sydney: The Story Of A City which I think is a short IMAX film? Fantastic music from a bloody fantastic composer.

About half way through "Welcome To Melbourne" don't you just love the variations that theme goes through. The lush version on the strings, the solo trumpet and all those swirling woodwinds and low brass clusters underneath. The man differently known how to write stunning symphonic music. And Michael was right... he writes counterpoint with the best of them.

Just got this one last night. Not quite as good as I had hoped, but still an okay soundtrack. My big complaint is the length; it's only got eight tracks, clocking in at about twenty-two and a half minutes! Still, an overall entertaining listen.

    Favorite tracks:

    1. Page 47
    2. Cibola
    4. City of Gold
    8. Franklin's Tunnel

Get the first score, it'll blow you away. This is nothing compared to the 1st one.

    Ah, ok. Thanks! beer

But it's not that great either.

    -Erik-

In fact I would say the two are so close to being identical musically, only the fact that the first one has a few more minutes of music distinguishes them.

There is some aggressive material on the album which is not as listenable, but you an make a great playlist out of the more melodic cues that are really pleasant and soothing - great music to unwind to (Blood Diamond Titles, Archer & Solomon Hike, Maddy & Archer, Goodbyes, Your Mother Loves You, Thought I'd Never Call, London, Solomon Vandy).

    cool

I love the action music from Blood Diamond. I like the softer moments as well. I think the whole album is really enjoyable.

NP: A Perfect Place - Mike Patton

The main theme is really catchy, but the music is also really weird. A lot of people won't like it, but I do.

    Hancock - John Powell

The opening track is pure dynamite. It has a 1950s Elmer Bernstein vibe to it - shades of Walk on the Wild Side - absolutely brilliant.

    NP: Lover's Prayer (McNeely)

Very beautiful, romantic score. A nice score to listen to alongside Desplat's Luzhin Defense.

I never commented on this one. IMHO, this could be McNeely's best score. I think it's a hidden gem that I'm sure a lot of people around here haven't heard. Sure, McNeely is known for his John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bruce Broughtonesque adventure music but this intimate score is easily one of his most original, emotional, and personal scores. A score that was obviously crafted with loving care and compassion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A personal compilation of gigantic, epic film music edited together in custom suites. I just finished with Christopher Gordon's superb Mody Dick and have moved on to Graeme Revell's under rated Mighty Morphin Power Rangers This is epic music we rarely here from Revell.

My personal Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Fantasy End Credits) and Warriors of Virtue suites are up next and afterwards I'm going to give McNeely's Lovers Prayer a spin!

    -Erik-

I would like to hear some of these suites! smile
I've just downloaded your Williams one and am eager to hear it.

RE: MOBY DICK. Gordon does have a concert suite of that one worked out, as he did for ON THE BEACH (it played at Soncinemad), but it has not been performed sadly.

  2. Has ANYONE heard (or have) this?

    http://www.amazon.com/Vision-2-Spirit-G … mp;sr=1-41

The reviews make it sound different from his normal output in movies as of late, and other reviews I read make it sound more akin to his theme-based orchestra score to "Eaters of the Dead".

I tried and failed to find any samples online to listen to.

I usually listen to only first 4 tracks and last 2 tracks, because others have too much mickey mousing for focused listening. But, those first 4 tracks and last 2 tracks are terrific! "Cody's Flight" makes me feel like flying. cool One of the best scenes & scores of all Disney movies...

    NP: Aladdin - Alan Menken

Menken's scores may not be the most widely appreciated ones nowadays but I for one enjoy them a lot. And this is the one which not only creates a very nice Arabian atmosphere with mostly normal orchestral instruments, but also features quite a lot of score compared to what Disney usually releases on its soundtracks.

I love each and every song on this and all the score too, but my favourite score tracks are Street Urchins, To Be Free, On A Dark Night, Cave Of Wonders, Aladdin's Word, The Battle and Happy End in Agrabah. Cave of Wonders is a terrific Menken action track and To Be Free has great themes.

Addicted to his main theme. the old Elfman mixed with the new elfman. But it seems more for a tim burton movie than for a Angelina Jolie movie...anyway is addictive!!!

  4. NP: The Incredible Hulk - Craig Armstrong

I've just made a start to this and I'm really enjoying it. It definitely has that orchestral/synth rhythm style that I like about his work. I suppose that one criticism could be that the main titles isn't particularly strong; it isn't a "superhero theme". But that doesn't matter.

BTW, as it was a CD-R it took ages to rip to computer. Does anyone else find that CD-Rs take much longer to rip compared to "pressed" CDs?

NP: Beauty and the Beast (Special Edition) - Alan Menken

Absolutely beautiful score and songs. My school did this as our annual spring musical; I had the second horn part (I normally would have had first, but the first part for that is insane), and I must say, it was incredible! I soon got the move soundtrack off iTunes, and love it to bits. love

    2. Belle (Soundtrack Version)
    4. Gaston (Soundtrack Version)
    8. Human Again
    13. The Beast Lets Belle Go (Score)

Based on the other nominations I'd say yes. Was it the year's best score? Hardly. However, it's one of Menken's best efforts... both song and score wise.

In all it's glory, Complete 2CD lossless at almost 2 hours of total duration, this is gloriously Zimmer's most outstanding work along with THE THIN RED LINE, by far. Brilliant.
