NP Wolverine (Harry Gregson-Williams)
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Boring, uninspired, bland, make your choice. Very disappointed. Not that I was expecting the soundtrack of the year, but this? Ok, I haven´t watched the movie, I don´t know if there are important cues missing, but judging for what Steven said in the Recent Viewing thread, I´m afraid that´s all.
Why would you expect anything good of this?
The guy's bored and he doesn't have a problem showing it since long now.

You're not wrong. It's your opinion. As long as you believe it, you're not wrong. -

NP The 13th Warrior (Jerry Goldsmith)
Dark, agressive, bold, epic....just some of the adjectives I can find to define what is, IMO, a true masterpiece, or like some greek would say, a rare beauty (although beauty is not a word one would associate with a score liek this). Some of the most elaborated and complex action writing from Goldsmith, besides the great, great main theme.
Good score but the action writing isn't that elaborate or complex when you compare it with the composers past glories, it's very linear .On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Agree. The action music in this score is in autopilot. It's good autopilot action music, not like other his later scores, but in autopilot. I think even the mummy action writting was more complex, if not so enjoyable.
I think it's more appropiate to say 13 th warrior contains some of the most epic music from Jerry. -

I really like the 13th Warrior score too, powerfully bold and testosterone fueled like Zimmer's King Arthur. First Knight is better though. -

I adore "That New Car Smell"! Just beautiful on the most part.

NP: Quartet - Joe Hisaishi
This is the soundtrack from a movie directed by Hisaishi himself. The story is about 4 young musicians forming a strings quartet... it's enjoyable but also lots of cliches. What makes the movie worth is, of course, the music written by the director.
This movie has only one score cue, Lover's Rain. All other pieces were written as fictional classical pieces. So some pieces like Black Wall and Passacaglia, sound like existing classical music (Student Quartet is very Mozart!). But they still have Hisaish's signature sounds. Really interesting.
The most important piece is Quartet g-moll, which is played by the main characters throughout the story. It's a very beautiful & energetic piece, filled with Hisaishism. Not only the original piece played at the end of the film, but also several arrangements heard in other tracks are also amazing.
I especially love the end credits version (Track 1 Main Theme). The blend of strings quartet and synth beat is really awesome
I can't stop playing it!
In addition, this album has a nice medley of Hisaishi's film music (Melody Road: My Neighbor Totoro/HANA-BI/Kid's Return). The scene where the quartet playing this medley is much more obvious self-applause than Jack Black singing Driving Miss Daisy in The Holiday. But I love it!

NP Becoming Colette (John Scott)
I just recommended this work to Thor in another thread, and I´ve given it a full listen. Again, a proof of the talent (melody, orchestration,...) of John Scott. Too bad we don´t see his name in the big screen these days.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

Alan Williams? Using someone else's music but taking credit for it himself? Putting the thing out on a promotional CD for HIMSELF? Using it on his own website without ever mentioning that he didn't compose it? Surely you jest. -

NP: LOST (SEASON 4) / STAR TREK - Michael Giacchino
Lost is immense, although I wish I didn't know it as well. It's frikkin' weird. I'm only a few tracks in and I'm ashamed to say I know it all off by heart already (unused music at the beginning of Time and Time Again is cool though!). This hasn't occurred with a soundtrack in a very, very long time.
Star Trek...it's ok. The quality of the music is great, but bad album presentation lets it down. It doesn't feel like it's telling a story. I think I'll leave off on this until I've seen the movie and then I'll make up my mind. -

I am also playing Desplat; this time my favorite SYRIANA with its irresistibly beautiful and infective main theme, the soothing "fathers and sons" and its variations. This man's easily one of the boldest and most valuable men ever to pass through the film music medium.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
