Ever the contrary one, I'm backpedaling on Giacchino: I dont enjoy his scores to Lost, I find his take on Star Trek well crafted, but ultimately forgettable. In fact though I do enjoy a lot of what he does, it's just never to a point that I am really impressed or -to break that down to a more manageable level- will play his CDs just for fun.

Of course there are the exceptions that break the rule: I love his work on the Secret Weapons Over Normandy game (and to a lesser extent his Medal of Honor work) and I think his work on The Incredibles is the bee's knees, but the rest is more craft than art, in my opinion.
All praise to him for getting so much work done in so little time, and still being able to sound so fresh 9and he certainly does that!), but in the bulk of his work there's just no emotional reverb with me.

I appreciate honesty like this. I'm inclined to agree with you but I expect others here will view your critique as the second coming of Damian Thorn.

What others? I honestly don't think many people will have any problems with that. I'm a Giacchino fan, but I can completely understand Martijn's points.

not one of the best, even though that Marylin Manson theme is cool as hell

  2. NP: The Haunted Palace - Ronald Stein

I've not seen this film but I'd like to!

Directed by Roger Corman and from a story by H.P. Lovecraft and starring the ever watchable Vincent Price, Stein's title theme is one of my favourites. Pure melodrama!

I've seen it but I'd love to see it again. Us film fans have a lot to thank Corman for.

While I'm not down on Giacchino at all, I do find it harder to appreciate the STAR TREK score every time. I like Spock's theme, and the end titles arrangement in general, and in particular, the moment Steven cites at the start of 'Enterprising Young Men' (which makes for a great pre-title moment on on the big screen). But that main theme is really starting to grate on me...

  4. NP: Samsara (Cyril Morin)

If you don't like ethnic instrumentation, stay away! This one is a feast of that sort of thing. Three beautiful themes, with some less compelling connective texture.

Listening to My Life and Born Free.
Both of these score a great themes and are great to listen to all the way through.
  5. NP: Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2 (Kenji Kawai)

The big action track - about 10 mins long - is really something. It's basically drums, choir and electronic loops, but is a powerful brew.

The Abduction Club - Shaun Davey

A pleasant little movie with a pleasant little score. Given the Irish setting it is strange that there are no really Irish-sounding tracks in the score. The credits in the CD booklet say that the music is performed by the Irish Film Orchestra - and that's where my complaint comes: I don't know anything about the Irish Film Orchestra but much of the music sounds like it is played on a synthetizer instead of a real orchestra. Maybe it's just my ears but it really sounded cheap sometimes. Not all the tracks, just sometimes.
  6. Robocop (Basil Poledouris)

One of my most cherished works from the composer. The themes are brilliant, and the marriage of orchestra and synths is a good one. And for once I would say this is a release I don't need to see expanded. I have the original Varese release and don't know if there's much more music in the film than what is found here. But all the good stuff is most definitely present. Robocop is a rocker! punk

    Brilliant score.

I have the later Varese edition and the extra tracks barely make any difference if any.

As always with Brion, organic and small-scale, experimental and intimate listen with touching moments. Quite an enjoyable listening experience.
