    Fair enough. sad
I understand the reasoning behind it, but I myself -and I stress I am just speaking for myself- I'd much rather hear a show with someone who is really passionate about what is played, rather than "having to" play everyting in the name of "fairness".

People getting up in arms about omitting certain musical pieces from a canon in my honest opinion should re-examine their priorities and maybe find another hobby (such as digging into historical and sociological aspects of English mercenaries being sanctified and romanticised for failed murder plots. Just an example off the top of my head.)

  1. I like both of the scores - Insurrection and Nemesis.

People who moan about things like that are just plain irritating. Fair enough, if it's something they're paying for - they have a right to complain if they don't think they are being given a product which is satisfactory. But when it's someone doing it in his spare time, like Erik's show or the FSM podcast... well, there's not much basis to get up in arms over that. For sure, it's perfectly reasonable to disagree with the opinions of those who are giving them (as I disagree with Erik about Nemesis!) - but the reaction to that FSM podcast was just plain infantile.

np: Gears of Wars 2 - steve jablonsky

I don't hate this score. There's nothing great about it. It's a an extension of the Transformers/D-Wars sound, very thematic with lots of pulsing rhythms and and choir stuff. It feels somewhat like Steve's on auto-pilot a bit. You can coast through the entire album without having one of those "ooooooh" moments. I definitely like Kevin Riepl's effort on the first score more since there's some truly interesting musical sounds and devices being used that draws the attention more than this score.

There's something they should put on the poster.

"This rocks!" - Scorekeeper, Ain't It Cool News
"This is... great" - James Southall, Movie Wave (unedited quote was actually "This is so bad I would rather be tied to the bottom of a well and have fifteen Frenchmen suffer diarrhoea all over me from a great height than ever have to listen to it again")

    Haha!

Though, I did realize something while listening to it, that if you listen to it as a series of 30 second clips, it would be so much more interesting. Which bring up the glaring point that perhaps this music really was meant to be a part of the gaming experience (something that I have no interest in) , to heighten the tension and pulses you from one scene to another, and the score probably works way better in the game.

    Edit

I just went to Kevin Riepl's very nice site and read that he did provide some additional music for the game. It would be interesting to hear how different it is from the first score.

Just finished with Nemesis and I have to say the End Credits are a lot better than I remember. I think it's the last statement of Goldsmith's theme which sounds flat but I love the performance of the expanded Remus theme. Still, it's not enough to save this score from being one of... if not THE worst score of the series. The Deep Rising lifts are irritating!

    You can add this one:
"It's a revolutionary idea: to do the complete opposite of what a great film composer would have done. What daring!" - Michael McLennan

    NP: Cheri (Desplat)

Despite the modern touches, the score this one is reminds me of is actually Rozsa's melodrama score Diane. Mostly in the florid style of the main theme.

  4. NP: Star Trek III (Horner)

Call me crazy, but I'm pretty happy with the amount of score on the album.

Men wearing white holding an unusual jacket for you to "try on" will soon be paying you a visit! dizzy
  5. "Jake Speed"
    Mark Snow

The BSX CD (I ordered from SAE, since ordering from BSX is ... not such a great idea).

It was nice to hear the score in crystal clarity with none of the LP scatching and hiss. Some slight mixing changes were made (one for the better, in my opinion), and some of the beats in two cues lacked the "depth" in sound they had on the LP; too dry on this mastering.

Snow's score is the quintisessial 80's synth sound at it's best; pan pipes, electronic drums and hits and other instruments (I think the pan pipes might be the only real instrument in the score).

Themes, motifs, rhythmic, just fun fun fun all the way. I'd love to have this composing mode of Snow, with some Horner or Goldsmith orchestrations, for other scores. That would be some fun.

Not like his work on "The X-Files" at all.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.

I've watched this many times - indeed the second film - and think the existing albums are excellent presentations. Goldsmith's first two Trek scores are the ones which I think would benefit most from expansion (while- again - they are fine albums as is, there's enough fine unreleased music in ST:TMP and ST 5 to merit the treatment).

NP: Planet Earth (Jungle Section)- George Fenton

Its late and I don't have much time for music, so I thought I'd just listed to a few minutes of Planet Earth. The jungle music sounds a little sci-fi. I guess it is because the creatures in the jungles are sort of alien to us humans.
