NP : OBSESSION - Bernard Herrmann

A CDR a friend did for me from LP. I really hope that this will one day get a proper CD release, it's an incredible score.

It's not just the iphone; it's how much extra work this is going to cause me.

    - I phoned my current network provider and asked for a PAC today so i could transfer my number
    - The iphone i ordered is being delivered tomorrow and i obviously want to wait for the new one
    - Hopefully I will be able to return this and cancel my contract for now
    - Hopefully the new one will be available soon enough so the PAC code (that i'm still waiting for!) doesn't expire

Much like Anthony, I'm not in the mood for happy or calm music. I need something... moody (moving back home for 12 weeks sad).

It's a lovely score. Is the film worth seeing?

Every minute is worth seeing. The period is presented very well. The scenery is beautiful. Norton and Watts are on the ball. And Naomi Watts... kiss

    I LOVE that comment.

It doesn't take much to make me want to run and buy a three-piece linen suit. I often feel I was born in the wrong era!

Sounds like I must watch The Painted Veil.

    La Sconosciuta - Ennio Morricone

Few pieces of film music are as sublimely beautiful as this score's opening piece. It veers off in a very different direction after that, but is a simply stunning piece of work.

I still haven't seen the film. I must get my hands on it - it would be nice to see a somewhat acclaimed modern film containing Morricone's talents. There are enough of the other sort!

    The 13th Warrior
The score to me is an adventure. The themes and action music are amazing.

In the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever. knight

Was I the only guy to memorize that Norse prayer after seeing the film. smile

The film certainly had its production problems and mistakes, but for me it is absolute perfection.
It also has some of my favorite film dialogue.

"[Ahmahd is given a Viking sword]
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: I cannot lift this.
    Herger the Joyous: Grow stronger."

"Herger the Joyous: It's all right, little brother... there are more!"

"Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: Have we anything resembling a plan?
Herger the Joyous: Mm-hm. Ride till we find them... and kill them all."

    I was playing :Molossus

I found this track even more addictive than "like a dogs chasing cars". batman's heroic theme with all this "black rain" string moments are SCOREORGASMIC!

Perfect to play when you are driving.

    NP:Legend (Goldsmith)

I have to be in the right mood, but it's one of the most creative, and magic scores I ever heard.

"the ring" is a really awesome cue.

Decided to start off today with some lengthy cues and concert pieces.

I began by listening to the exceptional "Nausicaa: Symphonic Poem" by Joe Hisaishi from his Works album. I need to give the original soundtrack recording another spin because I loved everything I heard in the Symphonic Poem.

I moved onto the concert arrangement of Michael Kamen's "An American Symphony" on his A New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms album. The suite features the cues Iris - Cole's Tune - Marking Homework - Rowen - Finale.

The last of my lengthy suites this morning is the slow moving "A Dark Knight" from The Dark Knight A meditative piece that's a mix of The Da Vinci Code, The Thin Red Line and Batman Begins.

Later, I'll be spinning a 2CD set of music from The Planets, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars featuring The Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta. I will then be moving onto Kundun by Philip Glass. It's a score I never warmed up to but I was inspired by Michael's "The greatest soundtracks of my life" facebook post to give it another try.

    This one?

Any good? Would you recommend it for The Planets recording?

    Deep Impact (James Horner)

Such a low-key yet highly emotional piece of scoring. I absolutely love the lengthy tracks that, as so often is the case, show Horner's talent for structuring and building up to something memorable. The album can drag a little but the ending is fantastic.

It's Ok. The sonics are Ok as well. I was surfing at the FSM board earlier and most agree that Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony's version is the definitive performance with the best sonics!

Erik ( I don't believe you visit the Off Topic Now Playing very much? ) but the Charles Dutoit version is the one I've recommended over all other versions, and I have quite a few versions of the work, very VERY recommended.

I know enough... thanks. Dutoit version it is.

    Twister (Mark Mancina)

Love it. Mancina absolutely nailed the fun factor in this one. An exhilirating blend of orchestra and synths with killer themes and plenty of cool. And I adore the wailing guitar solos in the final track. A perfect way to end the album.
