I found that album much more enjoyable with a drastic re-arrangement (as with most Tyler scores, unfortunately!) "Land Train", "Judgment" and "Suite" make a great last set of cues. I like scores that end with an action climax followed by an emotional climax.

sort of like sex, except not

    who said that?? confused
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

    NP: Star Trek (Michael Giacchino)

Saw the movie last night (a lot of fun BTW), and am playing the score right now. I just don't see the immense praise for the score -- sure it works in the film and it has a hummable theme, but it doesn't scream "Star Trek" to me (even with Courage's theme incorporated at the end). I know Abrams meant the film and the score to be a fresh start to the franchise, but there's too much of Lost and other Giacchino influences for me to really enjoy outside the film.

But it (and the film) are a lot more enjoyable than the previous May release, Wolverine. Talk about disappointment, film- and score-wise. ST is a breath of fresh air.

I've gone through all sorts of opinions on Giacchino's Star Trek. Thankfully I've finally landed on a very positive opinion of it... in fact, I love it! (And as chance would have it, I'm playing it right now!? Spooky.)

I still don't think Star Trek was a huge success score wise, but it clearly has something good about it considering how much I listen to it! punk

Land Of The Lost - Michael Giacchino

I think non-fans of Giacchino are going to have a hard time with this one, and non-soundtrack-buffs would probably look at us in disgust if they heard this.

It's off the wall, bizarre, makes little sense when you put your mind to it, but it's incredibly fun and not the slightest bit typical.

It's got the catchy Giacchino motifs that usually all scores are full off, but unfortunately it's weak on the thematic side.

Nonetheless, it's got structure, it feels like it has a beginning, middle and end, and on the whole it's satisfying.

A decent amount of action and lighthearted music, and the strange sound to a lot of it is very appealing.

I still think Up remains triumphant in the best Giacchino score this year (or Lost season 4 if you are counting releases), but this one is much easier to get to quickly than I thought it would be.

    cool

Hehe...and an easter egg at the end of the final track for those of you who know the TV show theme!!

  4. Halo 3 (Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori)

Say what you will about this, but for me this is a truly enjoyable album... Why? Because it has themes. Great themes that stick in your head if you've played the games. It features everything from the musical universe of Halo performed by orchestra and choir, and the odd bit of synths thrown in. It may not flow very well in the film score sense, this is a video game arranged album after all, but what's on offer here is goddamn cool, and is performed to perfection.

Looking forward to the Halo 3: O.D.S.T. score, a sort of spin-off set in the Halo universe.

    Terminator Salvation Danny Elfman

One of the very few good things about coming back from uni to live with my parents during the summer is the sound system in my room. It breaths new life into all these new scores I had accumulated this year at uni!

Love this score... and I love my hi-fi and speakers.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts. I know absolutely nothing of this score. Ordered it yesterday.

A bit like Hammett mixed with The Deep.

I'll let you know more later.

What if someone hasn't heard Hammett or The Deep either? wink

    Cripes!

Well, it's got a strong hint of that Body Heat kind of sleaziness and there's some atonal work too but I only got to play it half way through. All I can say so far is that I did enjoy it but it's not the kind of Barry that really carries me away, it's certainly nowhere near the league of Body Heat.

As soon as I give this more attention I'll report back.

It's been ages for me as well. I guess... correction... I know I'll be spinning it in the coming days.

  9. It's fairly mature, emotional stuff. No dissonance in sight, all fairly melodic. A couple of tense cues, a couple of beautiful light (but weary) pieces and a stunner of a main theme (this one is particularly romantic and wrenching).
