Ooh! Quite possibly my fave JG score. Katya's theme and The Family Arrives are stunners!
NP: Alexandre Desplat - Reines d'un jour
Ouch! It hurts forking close to $40 for this and getting something like Vladimir Cosma on pop/jazz/comedic mode mixed with some Rota goofiness. There's one lovely, upbeat theme that's as close to floating in the clouds as one can ever get!
On the whole, not something I'll return to often.

Couldn't get batteries for my MP3 player in time so I crammed a few tracks into my cellphone to listen to on the train. Was only about 200 MB so I could choose only a few tracks, but all those were good ones IMO, really enjoyed them.

I think you should stop the HGW-bashing. I'd say it should be obvious that he DOES care, to anyone who read the last interview posted in his thread. It's just that he's been typecast and this is the kind of music he's been asked to write in recent years.

It's fairly mature, emotional stuff. No dissonance in sight, all fairly melodic. A couple of tense cues, a couple of beautiful light (but weary) pieces and a stunner of a main theme (this one is particularly romantic and wrenching).
Indeed; sad, melancholic and beautiful is how i'd call it but Michael made it even clearer. It's a very fine example of film music if you ask me.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Yes, a great film, indeed and Yared's (and Moucha's) best work to date! Quite short on CD but it is worth every minute. -

Seriously though, that's his choice (and rightly so: he has his bills to pay like the rest of us, and I'm sure many of us at one time or another do things in the line of our jobs that aren't fully compatible with who we are, what we feel and what's best in us.
However at the exact same time we still bear the responsibility for the consequences of those choices.

"Humdrum material" is an opinion. That HGW is not writing music to your personal taste does not mean that said music is by definition "humdrum" or any other negative thing by someone else's taste. And while you certainly have the right to heap as many negative opinions on the man's work as you like, that certainly does not give you or anyone else the right to judge his intentions or how much he cares.I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -

I'm not judging his intentions.
I'm judging the consequences.
Whatever intentions may be at the basis of it is up for speculation, I guess, but I don't think some suppositions are out of order: i.e. the willingness to be pegged into scoring generic material is -in my opinion- a choice, and I certainly would challenge that choice.
It may well be that there are mitigating circumstances (he having three ex-wives with grudges, sixteen kids and his mom's mortgage to pay, or things like that), but as I am not privy to those I can't possibly comment, so I'll have to reasonably assume this is a personal choice and therefore obviously open to valid criticism!
I will read the interview you linked to above, though, to see if there's anything there that might sed some light on the whole situation.

My statement about intentions was more aimed at D, who said it's obvious that he doesn't care.
If he doesn't care, why would he bother to write a full, 25+ note theme for Wolverine? (in addition to several subthemes...I swear there is more thematic material in his score than in Kamen's and Ottman's scores combined). If he didn't care, surely he could have written a vague four-note motif thingy like Djawadi did for Iron Man?
And speaking of Iron Man, even that isn't ground to judge the composer's intentions or even the value of the music. People like that music. Case in point: was hosting a LAN party and my friends know I won't play any music besides movie scores, so they specifically requested Iron Man because it's something they actually enjoy. As much as those who prefer the traditional film score may despise such modernization, you can't say that Djawadi didn't do his job well...I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -

Well, with 30 years being 1979-2009, it has some pretty strong scores to contend with!
Like the one I'm playing for example:

You and many others, Matt.
Any version of this is hopelessly out of print and remains very much sought after.
I found a few here, but you better have deep pockets.
I've seen some floating buy at eBay for not completely insane prices (up to $60).
I got my copy (the 1998 Super Tracks release) many years back from a little second hand shop in Rye, UK.
They do have an online prensence, so you might want to keep them in your sights as well: www.backtrackrye.com.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Mind though that it's 40 bucks for the 8 track Southern Cross release, NOT -as is suggested by the front cover image- the 2 CD Super Tracks release!

Don't forget to mention that it is co-composed with Stéphane Moucha, Yared's regular orchestrator.

Tastes or not, the quality of his outcome has dramatically dropped during the last years, and this coming from one of the biggest fans of scores like SPY GAME, MAN ON FIRE or the complete recording sessions 4-disc set from KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. He's getting lazier by the minute and it sounds. Do you REALLY think that a composer of his status couldn't do anything more worthwhile with assignments other would KILL for, like the latest X-MEN? Yeah, let's all cry in sympathy for a guy who gets millions of dollars to deliver something he doesn't deliver at the end, just because 'they make him'.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Well, my most played tracks are Main Title, Mahoney's Debut, Night Time, The Flight of Magorium, and Finale. The two main themes are favorites of mine, presented very well in the score.
