    Twister (Mark Mancina)

Love it. Mancina absolutely nailed the fun factor in this one. An exhilirating blend of orchestra and synths with killer themes and plenty of cool. And I adore the wailing guitar solos in the final track. A perfect way to end the album.

I'm going to say it... Twister is a GREAT score!

    This one?

Any good? Would you recommend it for The Planets recording?

It's Ok. The sonics are Ok as well. I was surfing at the FSM board earlier and most agree that Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony's version is the definitive performance with the best sonics!

    -Erik-

Erik ( I don't believe you visit the Off Topic Now Playing very much? ) but the Charles Dutoit version is the one I've recommended over all other versions, and I have quite a few versions of the work, very VERY recommended.

I know enough... thanks. Dutoit version it is.

Twister is a great listen. I love the opening shot. The orchestra's entrance there is perfect. I love hearing Mancina bring the orchestra in on the track. smile

Does anyone have Twister on Blu-ray? It seems like it would be great.

Snooz and yawn out of its originality and nothingness apart the loudness. There are far better Tyler scores (or scores in general) than this one, imo.

Well, how many scores has the guy written and how many are as good as DARKNESS FALL, THE HUNTED, and FRAILTY. From then to now there is way more crap than good! He should take a step back and maybe write ONE great score a year instead of 4 mediocre to crumby scores a year.

Indeed; over-exposion brings negative effects in this place, and the inevitable self-recycle. Take a step back, and re-think the whole thing as Erik said here, IS the right way to go.

Some come to mind, and very different in style: Timeline, Constantine, Annapolis, Bug, Partition, Tokyo Drift, Rambo, Bangkok Dangerous, Eagle Eye.

Of course there are also a lot of weak / minor works. Bu t I don´t let the crap to overshadow the good ones.

But one can´t pretend a composer to be brilliant in every single work. Not even those who do only one or two scores a year.

That said, I was the first to say Tyler overworks (therefore recycles his own material).

maybe overrated, but I clearly started because I like the film, I like the sound. That doesnt' mean I don't know it is standard Tyler stuff.

Anyway, Fast & Furious is really boring after a while

But if you go over all great composer's filmographies you'll see more VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT works than you will MEDIOCRE to CRUMBY. So that's why we bring up "off to such a promising start" with Tyler because there is something there in his earlier works that show GREATNESS. Unfortunately, that GREATNESS isn't coming through in his more recent work.

NP: 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony - Christopher Gordon

    Bah-liss!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT - SCOREGASM! Gordon's Commonwealth Games music literally brings a tear to my eye. So much emotional, so much strength and power in his music. He has a command of the orchestra only the likes of the truly great do. I will NEVER tire of this score. And waiting in the wings to knock me off my ass again is his Rugby music which contains one of my all time favorite themes!!! Those heroic french horns with a sprinkle of woodwinds and xylophone! Then the theme get passed to the trumpets which send shivers down my spine with fluttering piccolo over top and strings racing underneath! Awesome musical colour!

That score deserves praise. It is solid, great fun and unlike most of his score, has a decent structure.
