Toy Story 2 - Randy Newman

Really enjoyable. The best Pixar score that's not written by Giacchino.

I haven't heard any Randy Newman Pixar scores. Am I making a huge mistake? I enjoy the Giacchino and Thomas Newman scores.

I like it too, but for me Newman's best Pixar score (and, indeed, my favourite Pixar score whether not by Giacchino or by Giacchino) is A Bug's Life. It's certainly the Pixar score with the highest number of memorable themes; and some of the orchestral writing is phenomenal. Newman is never given the credit he deserves for that. Things like "Dot's Rescue" represent amazing writing.

The Randy Newman scores are completely different from the Thomas Newman and Giacchino ones. Much more what you might call "traditional" scoring for animation. Certainly not for everyone, but I love them. So much energy and so much quality.

    Shame on me. shame

I think you're right. I enjoy TS2 because it's incredibly fun, but come to think of it A Bug's Life is the most structured and well rounded score.

Ooh! Quite possibly my fave JG score. Katya's theme and The Family Arrives are stunners!

NP: Alexandre Desplat - Reines d'un jour

Ouch! It hurts forking close to $40 for this and getting something like Vladimir Cosma on pop/jazz/comedic mode mixed with some Rota goofiness. There's one lovely, upbeat theme that's as close to floating in the clouds as one can ever get! biggrin On the whole, not something I'll return to often.

That's one of the few Desplat scores I'm not keen on. I once was sent a CDR of it, and was very glad I didn't pay top dollar for it at auction. I saw you listing it as a purchase the other day and wondered how much you'd like it.

  2. NP: The Home of Dark Butterflies - Panu Aaltio

I've not had much chance to listen to this one but the track "Forgiveness" is certainly one that sticks out as being such a beautiful cue.

NP: The Life of Emile Zola-Max Steiner. This is a 78 RPM acetate transfer of the material. Scratchy, of course, but it has that Steiner sound all the way.
    listen to more classical music!
  3. NP: Twilight Zone: The Movie - Jerry Goldsmith

Of all the segments I prefer his music for "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" - Goldsmith at his best!

    Diamonds Are Forever
    John Barry

Mr. Wint's and Mr. Kid's theme is the highlight of the score. Perfect. They are also the highlight of the film. That isn't really saying all that much. :/

I gather it's quite minimalist, is it not?

I think it's unsung as one of the great villainous themes. A theme for a pair of creepy, gay, murderous psychos....Barry nails it 100%.

This score has many highlights and my favourite is 007 and Counting. I agree with you on the film though, it's one of the very weakest Bond's.

The Crimson Wings/ Les Ailes Pourpres The Cinematic Orchestra

This new score by Armand Amar Home has sparked a listening frenzy of music for documentaries. I didn't know about this group at all. Very lyrical from beginning to end. Next on the list: Sam Cardon's Zion Treasure of the Gods

    NP: Ratatouille - Michael Giacchino

I've been repeating this album so many times in these 3 days! I've got into this score since when I heard Colette Shows Him Le Ropes on the official site, so I'm really happy to finally get this CD on my hand.

All the themes are adorable, from the emotional main theme to the "ratty" Remy theme, comedic Linguini theme, fun tango theme, and everything. End Creditouilles is fantastic, and the song by Camille is also really pleasant.

The best Pixar score I've ever heard (so far).
