    Thanks for the link LSH. Pat is such a gifted musician and composer. I stumble on this while looking further on youtube.

    Yeah I heard the same comment, "elevator music ", to describe many composers ( Barry, John Williams, Goldsmith, Morricone, Vangelis, Zimmer, and a lot more, just name them). Good for them if it gets them royalties!

    Everything I've heard up to this point reminds me of elevator music (or something equivalent). If that YouTube video is one of his better moments, then I can't say I'll likely enjoy the rest - even if I do appreciate the talent the man clearly has.

    Actually, I don't think I have too!? I think it comes from movies and TVs rather than real life experiences!

    Me too. It's a saying that has become part of popular culture. To me if that means 'tuneful' and 'melodic' then that's fine by me.

    I don't think Metheny is going to win you over but try out a track called 'Finding And Believing' which has a wonderful orchestral middle section.

    Elevator music was an invention (by the Muzak company) from the earlier days of elevators, when people were still quite nervous about riding iron cage contraptions.

    The reason was two-fold: to actually soothe people's nerves during a relatively long ride in cramped space (elevators were much slower 80 years ago), and to mask the sound of the clanking, ringing and rumbling of the elevator mechanism.
    It was a mainly American thing, and actually out of vogue since the early sixties, but the phrase remains as a cutural heritage.

    Hmmm...didn't think of that.
    It seemed appropriate to post here, though.

    Tom, even though Muzak has thoroughly been rebranded in the early nineties, with few of those classic re-recorded easy listening pop hits being available, Muzak proper still sports several so-called "environmental" radio stations that provide exactlly that kind of music.

    Whether or not those are on FM, I have no idea though. spin
