    Never let me go

Very slow and somber. Wanted to rate it a 5 as I saw it, but the end made quite an emotional impact and I upgraded my rating to a 7. It certainly deserves the saddest movie ever award.

    My rating: 7

I want to see this - read the book on holiday, which is A-grade. And I like the soundtrack a lot.

Ah, yes, that reminds me that I enjoyed the soundtrack in the movie and I wanted to check it out. Will get right on it.

    You don't know Jack

Saw it with the gf after it was mentioned in this thread. Must admit I found it rather boring though, but I don't regret watching it. Al Pacino did a mean Dr. Death.

    My rating: 5

    The sweet hereafter

Sloooooooooooooow. It was all kinda interesting though, and never poorly done. Ian Holm was very likable. I don't regret watching it as I'm sure it will make me appreciate Mychael Danna's low-key and rather sounding unique score more.

    My rating: 5

    Shallow grave

Really good movie. Unlikable characters, but you can't help liking them after a while. Nice twist at the end.

    My rating: 8

Is never let me go from the same director who made the notebook ?
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. No, it's not Nick Cassavetes.

why do i remember it linked to that movie ? Anyway the music is wonderful. What makes the movie so sad ? Is it realistic or cheesy sappy stuff ?

The book is about a society which discovered that it could "cure" diseases by "growing" children and then harvesting their organs for transplant when they get older, and it is about their gradual awakening to the reason for their existence.

Adjustment Bureau- Alright. What a really interesting idea for a film. A poor execution of it though. This film could have been so much. However, it just failed in many regards. To mention, no climax in the ending at all.

It also completely screwed up its own major free will vs. pre-destination theme. They added a twist to the plot that essentially made everything pre-destination, when they seemed to still want to focus on the power of free will.

Damon and Blunt were good. Thay seemed to have great charisma together.

I think the script was by far the worst thing this film had going for it. There were some really hokey scenes that made my girlfriend, her roommate, and I laugh from their awkardness. It also seemed as though they took the short story the filmed is based off of, and just kept adding stuff to it to make it long enough (many unimportant scenes).

On a second not, the score by Thomas Newman was very good.

I don't remember enough to describe. But it is your typical Thomas Newman. I didn't know who the composer was, and after immediately hearing his score I knew without a doubt who wrote it. I can't think of a score of his that I would compare to. slant
  3. Jersey Girl (2004)

Far from Kevin Smith's best, and lacking his usual sharp style, but I liked it nonetheless. Typical story but containing lovely characters, this is a nice watch (especially to see Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck together again)

    7 out of 10

I have to say I thought it sounded a bit like he was on autopilot within the film. It's pretty good, but nothing new. Wasn't James Horner attached to this at one time? I think he would inevitably have done one of his Beautiful Mind-style scores and it might have worked a bit better.

(I liked the film, btw, silly though it is - acting is excellent.)

What movies did I see recently?

Around Christmas time I was pleasantly surprised by a fantasy movie called: Stardust
I had never heard of this movie but I enjoyed it a lot!! And you know that time of year is perfect for watching movies, especially fantasy and family movies.

I saw Avatar on the movie channel again, and I thought it was nice. Remember that I missed it in 3D when it was in the cinema. (Yeah, I know, it was in theatres for over 6 months probably...)

I saw part of Sherlock Holmes, but it couldn't interest me enough to go sit down on the couch to watch all of it.

I saw The Mirror of Dr Parnassus. Speaking of fantasy. smile
BTW, I did not notice immediately when Johnny Depp and Jude Law appeared... duh. rolleyes

What I don't like about the movie channel is that I often watch the last part of movies... I can't just wait when the movie is on again, I see a movie has already started and I keep watching it. Very annoying of me. Anyway, that way I saw 3/4 of A Single Man. Beautiful story. I felt a bit depressed at that time myself and seeeing the movie made me feel better, you know, recognizing when you see the colours lit up like that.

And I watched All about Steve (minus the first 10 minutes), which was a lot more fun than I expected. A funny feel good movie, if you are not allergic to Sandra Bullock.

So what movies will I watch this month? Probably Prince of Persia, A Single Man (including the beginning), Killers, Night at the Museum II, Jurassic Park (with the kids), White Lion (documentary) and that's all I can think of now.

Oh, and I'm thinking of going to the IMAX soon (Omniversum, is that IMAX) to see Hubble!!
  5. I quite enjoy Stardust. Some lovely scenery on show - a lot of them were of Skye. Definitely the aerial shots and possibly some of the ground shots (it has been a while since any of the children have watched it so I can't remember).

I went and saw The King's Speech again. I'm so glad that the academy got it right. A wonderful example of how good films can be.

I enjoyed this one too. My girlfriend had me watch it with her. It definitely had a great story, and lots of great characters.

I did enjoy it. Robert De Niro as a cross-dressing pirate made it all worthwhile.

come to think of it, I meant something else, pompous, avant garde isn't the way to put it

  9. Pompous as in over-the-top? Certainly, and it first in with the tongue-in-cheek nature of the film.

    The Adjustment Bureau

Saw it last night at the cinema; yeap, those who suggested the plot is almost non-existent and / or childishly naive, i am in agreement with; let's just say this movie is only good for a Sunday midday family gathering with biscuits and tea; but onto the score, loved the function of the score in the film; i thought it was very underrated by film score lovers so far, mostly perhaps people expected something groundbreaking? Whatever the case, groundbreaking it is not, it's standard Newman but it's got a lovely piano-strings main theme, some very well built action cues and in 2 (at least) scenes in the film, it truly shines, most notably the one where Damon sees his g/f dancing for the first time; chilling, beautiful scene and the music plays a very prominent role on that (and a couple of other) parts.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
