Brilliant cast, brilliant story, brilliant dialogue, brilliant settings and gloriously un-PC as it should be for a film set in the 1800's, Maurice Jarre's score is perfect for the film.

They really don't make films like this anymore.

    10/10

I have never watched this film all the way through. I don't like any aspect of the film.

My top 10 of favourites: Spielberg & Cameron, what can I say? They've managed to make my jaw drop on many ocassions, maybe that's why my top 10 is a bit different from most:

ALIENS: all time awesomest film! Nothing can ever top this !!!!

And then in no particular order:

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (Spielberg in his prime)
BRAVEHEART (full of passion and brilliance)
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (the best war film IMO)
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (the best pure action film IMO)
    HOOK (the ultimate feel-good movie)
TITANIC (makes me feel I'm on that boat living the nightmare)
THE ABYSS (awe and wonder, and a superb Silvestri score)
MAGNOLIA (has some of the most spectacular performances ever)
RETURN OF THE JEDI (because it features the best of all Star Wars endings)
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.

I've warmed up to Ratatouille actually. I think it's quite clever but I still hate the forced love story which was completely unnecessary. And the score is probably the best Giacchino has done for a Pixar film.

Don't get me wrong, I love every Pixar film with the exception of three (A Bug's Life, Cars and Cars 2 :shudder: ) but Dragon, IMO, is by far the best animated "film" I've ever seen.

A lot of your list ( except THE ABYSS which I think is a borefest ) would make my top 200 films, top 200 being a GOOD thing, when I consider that I must have watched thousands of films in my life a top 200 is going to be made out of 4 and 5 star films, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN would make it into my top 20 and TERMINATOR 2 wouldn't be far behind.

Fair enough. I do love How To Train Your Dragon, perhaps as much as any Pixar film, but I'd have a hard time actually placing it above the best Pixar films (which for me are Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Toy Story 3 and Up... so not many then dizzy ).

I quite liked How to Train Your Dragon but I doubt it would break into my top 20 animated films.
  2. Now that I've given it some thought I would replace A.I. with Hook, both being Spielberg, but Hook just edging it when it comes to emotional value I get out of that film. I have nothing but love for A.I. but when it comes to me overflowing with emotions, having forgetten all my worldly troubles and feeling like a million bucks, Hook is the movie that does it!

So I've edited my post above.

I do like a lot of Disney animations! My top 20 would consist of all the Pixar films except Cars, Cars 2 and Up, and various classic Disneys. In top position... Lady and the Tramp.

It's a good job I don't also like West End musicals else people might start questioning my sexuality. Oh, I do like West End musicals. Oh.
  3. My favourite films... yikes, who knows what any of them are anymore.

    Some very good ones:

The whole terence malick shebang -- yep, all 5 of them
The Leone first 4 (dynamite and america don't quite make my list, both a bit indulgent)
Most of the Wong Kar Wai shebang (In the mood for love, Ashes of Time, Chungking Express, 2046, days of being wild... )
    The Insider
The Double Life of Veronique (hard to go past Kieslowski -- Trois Coleurs Bleu should be here too)
    Heat
    Groundhog Day
F for Fake (Orson Welles as his best)
Last of the Mohicans (the action, the emotion, the passion...)
    Coppola's BIG 4 (Godfather I & II, Conversation, Apocalypse)
    Kundun (scorsese)
    The Third Man
    Lawrence of Arabia
The Life Aquatic (my favourite Wes Anderson)
Uncle Boomee who can recall his past lives (thai film of 2010)
The edge of heaven (turkish film of 2007)
    The exterminating angel (bunuel)
No country for old men (for the coens, my favourite)
Dark City (I've grown up a bit since I thought this was the best thing since sliced bread, but it is good)
    Fritz Lang's M
    The Fog of War
Providence (Resnais) is very interesting, and more enjoyable than Resnais's other great films
Field of Dreams (if you need a male weepie!)
    The Dancer Upstairs
Vertigo and Psycho are pretty excellent too.
    Roadhouse (my favourite bad movie)

I don't know. Type one list one day. It will be outdated within a week.

I'll have a lookout for that one, Tom.

And Pawel? Go see The Man Who Would Be King again. It's one of the finest Kipling adaptations out there, and an incredibly powerful movie, with powerhouse performances throughout. Recommended wholeheartedly. The end will break your heart.

Oh, I saw The King's Speech. Really really nice. What can I say about it? I enjoyed it a lot.

After that Dorian Gray was on (it was Colin Firth night) and I watched the first 20 minutes of that and again I noticed how visually stunning that movie is.

I read some horrible things about Sanctum by the way... I guess it's love it or hate it?
    I thought it was good.

The only point where we deviate is with Prince Of Persia, which simply couldn't hold my attention both times I tried.

Really? For me it was good from start to finish! Good story and plot, action in the right places, humor in the right places, interesting cast and characters. I thought there was not one dull moment. Adventure all the way!

I saw all of these, never been so bored in my life. Actually the only I liked was the english speaking film with Jude Law. Not really my kind of film maker I'm afraid.

    The Insider
    Heat
    Dark City

But these are absolutely fantastic. Michael Mann makes such stylish films, I would place Collateral among them. And I want to watch Mohicans again, because it has been too long already.

  5. Ouch re: WKW. BLUEBERRY NIGHTS is the film you're thinking of, and for me while it's not the terrible film some feel it is, the lead performance by Norah Jones weakens the whole thing.
As to why I like them. I like the sensuality/mood of his films, the longing, the sense of lost souls in a distant ports... romantic stuff, with immaculate creative choices. (The same things I like about Michael Mann actually -- I enjoy COLLATERAL and PUBLIC ENEMIES, and even parts of VICE and ALI -- but perhaps just not as much as that 90s troika of MOHICANS, HEAT and INSIDER.)

I don't know if he's still involved but he was supposedly making AZINGCOURT ( from Bernard 'Sharpe' Cornwell's novel ), I sincerely hope he's still involved and it's being made, the book was brilliant.
