    I have more problems with this film than I care to mention. Let me sum up by saying it was poorly written, poorly acted (except for Michael Sheen, whose cameo was awesome just because it was so nice to see someone acting), poorly directed, dull, dreary, and nearly wasted Desplat’s beautiful score. It was mixed so low that at one point my wife turned and said that she hadn’t noticed the score yet, despite the fact that the first three tracks from the score album had already played. If I weren’t so familiar with the score, I’m not sure I would have noticed it either.

    The only redeeming feature about this film was that the “dramatic” pauses in between every single line of dialogue were long enough to properly make fun of what they had just said before they started to deliver their next line.

    Ugh. 1 star out of four or five or ten, or whatever scale you care to use.

    I agree. They wrote a very dramatic movie from the Bible story. That's why children didn't really enjoy it. It's a rather mature animated movie that's enjoyed much more by adults.
  3. Watched the recent remake of the great 1980s sci-fi show V last night on the SyFy Channel.

    It started off with a double-header: the pilot and the second episode. I was curious to see how it all started and wanted to see whether it will be a show worth investing more time in. And the bottom line is that, no, it's not something I'm going to keep up with.

    It started off really well. I assumed that, like a lot of these shows, there'd be a whole episode establishing the characters before we actually got down to seeing some aliens. But to the programme-maker's credit things started off quickly with the aliens arriving almost immediately.

    From then on the various main characters were all introduced. I don't want to spoil it by going into the plot to highlight one or two of the reasons the show just didn't keep me interested, but the overall feeling I had at the end was that it would turn into just another run-of-the-mill sci-fi show. Apparently, in the US when it was aired last autumn it was seen as a rival to Flash Forward - but, for me, the latter show is much better.

    Are you still following Flash Forward Alan? I quit after 8 or 9 episodes. It got rather uninteresting and over the top after the initial cool first episodes. Should I continue and hope for something better?


    The Lion King got me into film music somehow. The scene where the camera zooms in on Simba (which wasn't done very much in animated movies back then!) and has to run for the gnoes got me hooked! It's fantastic.

  5. Alan, I felt the same about V back when it first aired. They showed all their cards on the first episode! I thought they would go at least a little while before making it obvious what the visitor's intentions were. The writing wasn't great besides. I watched all four of the first episodes, but it never got better, so I haven't tuned in for any of the new ones at all.

    All I can say is "mid-season break"!

    Someone gave a big kick up the backside to those writers and they transformed it into a show where something actually happens! I stuck with it - and now I'm glad I did.

  7. Another Doctor Who tonight - and another encounter with The Daleks. rolleyes

    It's sad to see this show sliding down the slippery slope. Tonight main complaint was (in addition to the others mentioned the other day about last week's episode) [spoiler]was the reboot of the Dalek's design - which mainly amounted to the Daleks reaching middle age and looking a bit plumper than before. Probably some sort of BBC health and safety drive to give the actors sat inside the Daleks more space/indoor toilet, etc.[/spoiler]

    I wasn't home so I've recorded it .
    Mmm , it doesn't sound too promising then ?
    Yeah , lots of folks thought this would be THE return of the REAL Dr. Who but it looks like it isn't , ain't it ?!

    Haha! That's alright. I did the same too. Saw it on Megavideo and it was a torture-fest laden with facepalms. To make myself feel better I proceeded to see The Hot Chick (Rob Schneider, Rachel McAdams) after that. The latter was much better.

    25 minute episodes with 50 cent special effects and the BBC board constantly moaning it's so violent and kiddie-unfriendly? slant No thanks.
    I have been watchinga LOT of the Doctor Who back catalogue from William Hartnell up to Sylvester McCoy (the worst Doctor in my opinion. He's so cheesy I tend to refer to him as Doctor Gouda), and there is a lot, and I mean a LOT of truly awful script writing and padding, and some honest-to-God execrable ideas.

    Honestly, the lot crying for "the old times" is not waiting for a recap of stuff that was dated the minute it got out in the seventies, but for their childhood memories to be brought back.
    Which of course is utterly impossible.

    I had to google 'Martin Sheen' to find out who he was. He's Tony Blair and David Frost.

    Ah, yes, how could I have forgotten! He was brilliant in Frost/Nixon. Somehow it never dawned on me it was the same actor.

    Call Northside 777, directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Jimmy Stewart, was a documentary true story about a reporter for the Chicago Times. Very little music and I must say it could have used a little bit in certain spots but I think because of the format they decided not to include any.

  30. Today I caught about three hours of the award winning mini series "Blue Planet". Previously I had only seen a tiny bit of it.

    Some of the footage was simply stunning, other exciting, and just fun and/or captivating to watch. And George Fenton's scoring was top notch; I hope the one long cue (during the birds diving into the ocean to eat the fish) is one the CD.
