    NP: Inkheart ~ Javier Navarrete

Once again in the past days. I'm attracted by its fairytale quality, the dreamy atmosphere surrounding it. I especially like Dustfingure's theme which comes and goes in most pieces. Has anybody else given it a try?

I have, a couple of times. Wasn't really too fond of it, later saw the movie and didn't like the movie also. The score wasn't too memorable in that one either

Escape from the Planet of the Apes - Jerry Goldsmith

Goldsmith's approach to scoring sequels was amazing. This is so utterly different from the first score. Love it!
  2. Funny you mention that James, I was listening to Poltergeist II the other day and made the same remark: it's so different from the first one. As in a whole lot worse. For me it's like he wrote that score for a family film.

I wouldn't go that far. Poltergeist II isn't up to scratch on the original but it's still a damn fine score.

  3. I rate it a mediocre 3 out of 5. It's not all bad if you ignore the fact it's a horror score, but if you compare it to Poltergeist, it's fluffy and not worth to be called its sequel. But that's just me.

Well, he had a pretty poor sequel to work with but he still gives some good new material, the Indian mystic theme, the creepy hymn and some Omenesque choral work.

GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING | alexandre desplat

Have been playing this over the past few days in the car and at work. One of my favourite scores, it took a while though. The track Colours in the Clouds must be one of the high lights in his career. Really beautiful music and themes.

This man can surely write memorable music. I can't recall the movie that much- I should revisit it sometime.
Nice homage to Monsieur Delerue in "You are the Pan".

Themes? Beautiful? No man, you obviously don't know what you're talking about, or you can't describe Desplat's boring, droning music.

NP: March Of The Penguins - Alex Wurman

I'm spending the night revisiting some scores that I dismissed first time round and this particular score certainly stands out as one which definitely shouldn't have been. Perhaps it's because it really isn't what you expect from a score for a nature documentary. Intimate, warm and very soothing. I love it!

    NP: Kagemusha - Shinichirô Ikebe

I've never been able to listen to all of this 2-CD, 93-track set, with all it's short tracks and alternate versions, etc. But there are some worthwhile cues buried in amongst it all.

I'm still obsessed with my favourites playlist and so it's now onto...

"The Dinghy Race" - Wind - Basil Poledouris (I love this track.)

    NP: Xmen 3 Complete (powell)

One of the best superheroe scores ever.

Thematically rich and memorable. heroic, dark, dissonant, magic, epic....

My only complaintment is Powell overuse the rythms with the ankluns, it makes a less dinamic action pieces than in other of his scores.

Anyway, I love from Angel's theme to PHOENIX theme!!!!!

Music for a Darkened Theatre volume 2 (Danny Elfman)

Compilation album comprising of suites (in the form of separate tracks) of some of Elfman's best known work from and before '96. So I think Edward Scissorhands is utterly beautiful, the same can not be said of both Dolores Claiborne and To Die For, Black Beauty is sweet enough, and Batman Returns holds some mighty powerful moments. As for disc 2, there's Mission Impossible which is ok but nothing too memorable, the great Sommersby which sweeps in a grand lyrical way, Dead Presidents is a giant bore and waking me up again is the ever quirky and nice Nightmare Before Christmas, then comes Freeway and hating it with a passion, then come some television odds 'n ends, a bunch of cues / themes written for TV projects such as Amazing Stories, The Flash and Beetlejuice Animated TV Series. Gotta love those wacky bits from Pee Wee's Playhouse. But the best track of the second disc is kept for last: This Is Halloween (original demo), with all arranging, playing and singing done by Danny himself. smile

It might surprise I have none of the scores listed here, except for Sommersby, but then that clearly shows I'm not an Elfmaniac at all and that the music present here is more than enough, even some of which I can do without. But all in all it's a very nice compilation containing a wide range of music.

This is such a superlative score for me.

I'm just amazed at the incredible film music that came our way this year. Agora by Dario Marianelli, Baaria by Ennio Morricone, two excellent scores by Giacchino: Star Trek and Up, the wonderous scores by Philippe Rombi Ricky and Un Homme et son Chien, Alexandre Desplat that produces excellent scores in his sleep and that is not counting the amount of older scores (holy grails) that were released this year. We are very fortunate.

I'm getting into Michael Giacchino too this year, with my first score of his, Up, which is totally enjoyable. I'm still waiting on getting Desplat's Benjamin Button and going backwards with his scores as well. smile Fun stuff! smile
  7. I know I'm backtracking the posts, since I haven't been very consistent here, but I do miss you all!
Commenting on Danny Elfman though, I recently got Corpse Bride, which is interesting, I'm not sure how much I like musicals mixed with score, though it probably doesn't help that I haven't seen the film. I'm still giving it more chances, don't worry. smile
