Always makes me happy, this score. Don't know why.
Maybe because the score starts with a very lively theme?
That film has beautiful shots of snowy mountains.
NP Partition Brian Tyler
Excellent change of pace from his action scores. He should do more of these. -

I prefer listening to the real Raiders score.

It does sail a little close to the wind! But I love it. My favourite McNeely album. -

NP: Avatar - James Horner
I can hear lots of classic Horner scoring here... the choral material from Troy, the ethnic flutes and drums from Apocalypto, grand orchestration like in Titanic and mild synths. I also hear some Zimmer influence, especially in the action material (the "electric guitar" sounds more like the orchestra-plugged-through-power-amp Hans used in PoTC 2), and MV-esque electronics, which is good! Very enjoyable stuff, the tracks like 3 and 4 (I'm too lazy to type out the long names) are really soothing and pleasant, 5 and 7 have the great-sounding chants in Na'vi language we've been hearing about. I'm still listening to the last three or four tracks which is mostly action material, and they are nothing short of kick @$$!!!
Really great material, I'm enjoying it a lot. It's like Horner took the good qualities from a lot of his past scores and applied them here (including his danger motif
) and with a healthy dose of new material too. It's nothing like the dark electronic beasts we've come expecting to emerge from sci-fi films. I won't be surprised if this thing wins a lot of the awards this year. Beautiful.

Back to the Future (Alan Silvestri)
It's here. An album 24 years in the making... What a joy to finally have it my hands and hearing this in crystal clear sound. Well what can I say. It's old-school orchestral fun from begin to end, though I wouldn't rate it as high as some people would. It's a definite 4 STARS for me. The theme is unforgettable of course. '85 Twin Pines Mall' has that brilliant percussive build-up. 'Skateboard Chase' is huge fun. The mammoth 10 minute 'It's Been Educational / Clocktower' is the absolute motherfriggin' highlight where Silvestri shows his undeniable talent of how to structure a finale musical piece, it builds toward a truly memorable finish. One would be absolutely nuts not to LOVE this track.
Some minor remarks though: the short tracks could've been mixed with others as they are too short to leave an impression. And The two source cues are out of place with the rest of the score (or outatime if you will) and I'll skip them in the future.
But Intrada really has really delivered on the overall quality of this album, by adding a second disc with the alternate recording sessions. Can't wait to hear what's that like. Thanks a lot, men and women of Intrada for a stunning release.

I'm really looking forward to hearing this ( but only when I have the physical CD ) despite the 'Zimmer influence'.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Gorgeous. I guess the first time I heard this I wasn't in the mood and sort of neglected it for a while.
Stupendously romantic and wonderfully old skool.

Struggling to go through 10 hours of music... some good action tracks, but still mostly forgettable stereotypical RC stuff. Can't wait for the Sherlock Holmes score to get released. It should be an infinitely better listening experience. -

Yeah. That's like going through TLOTR extended scores in one go. Only difference is you won't fall asleep while doing so.

NP: Avatar - James Horner
This is much better in crystal clear CD quality sound than that yukky 112k stream at MusicMe. After my first listen I pick up on some Zimmer traits which I found quite interesting to say the least but after a few more listens this score is unmistakably Horner. Unfortunately, I can't believe that this is all Horner was able to come up with after spending a year on the project. It doesn't really break any new ground and doesn't really separate itself from the bunch of scores he has written in the past few years. HOWEVER, in saying that, there are some outstanding stand out cues like the wonderful blend of soft high and low strings and synths in "Pure Spirits Of The Forest" (although the bolder Batman Begins/Zimmeresque music near the end of the track is a bit distracting) There's the brilliantly exotic and hypnotic "Becoming One Of "The People", Becoming One With Neytiri" - probably my favorite track - and the big action cue "War" which is fun to listen to but Horner has done much better in the past.
I also hate the fact that Horner had to reach into his book of tricks and pull out that bird call from Project X, his theme from Glory, and the God awful four-note danger motif! Ugh!
Overall, I'd say this is average... maybe a notch above average. But with the time Horner had to write this it should have been 5 stars.

NP: Salomé - Roque Baños
Powerfully flamenco-driven score with a twist as it contains Indian percussion and -less surprisingly-oriental instrumentation to spice up the mix. If you're as fond of Spanish music as I am, this CD is an absolute delight: rousing, emotional, moving, energetic, mysterious, and then some. Maybe I'm just particularly sensitive to outbursts of emotion right now, but this music sure as hell gets my attention and my love! The flamenco playing is beyond reproach, the sound is crystal clear and the slower orchestral pieces drape themselves around the more explosive pieces like curtains of velvet.
This score is offbeat to be sure, and strongly folk-influenced, but if you're partial to that it's a wonderful and very welcome surprise, indeed. A beautiful listen.
4.5 out of 5'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
