The Last Legion - Patrick Doyle
I have been in the mood for some majestic, melodic action/epic music and Doyle's score seemed to be the right choice. I love it! -

Well, it seems that we are more in number who agree with Southall on this one!
A truly fantastic album!

This score really much , much better than AVATAR.
it's magic, Agressive, Dark, powerful....and it has Horner's Fanfarres!!! -

I saw the film at the movie theater and I had to play the score this morning. The film's images have been haunting me since I came out of the movie theater. Though film. I cried during many scenes. There isn't that much music in the movie but when it is there, it works. The main theme is a subdued guitar riff. There is only one "upbeat" cue that is the theme for Jake Gyllenhaal's character. Now, I would love to see Suzanne Bier's film and hear Johan Söderqvist's score. They have it on musicme. -

In my opinion this is Horner's least enjoyable recent score. Barely any melodies, long, mostly unmelodic action stuff, not my cup of tea at all. -

The original Danish movie is brilliant. I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks. Actually, I'm a bit worried about watching this remake, the original was so good.
As for the music, Söderqvist's main theme is really good but I can't remember anything else musicwise. This is not one of those movies that demand much music. -

I know he said album. It's alright. It's been a while since I last spun it... but I do know that opening track off by heart since it's on my daughter's "lullaby" mix CD. Those birds...

What else in on the lullaby mix? I was thinking ( straight off the top ) something from Goldsmith's A Patch of Blue would suffice too!?On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

in my opinion is "Boy in the stripped Piajama" and "all the king's men", and then Avatar.
How all the people know, I'm not a very fan of Horner anymore, but in fact, I enjoyed a lot of his scores for the last past years: Troy, The Missing, Four feathers (wich is one of his best scores, IMHO) and Beyond Borders.
NP:War from Avatar (horner)
Man, I'm addicted to this track. Nicholas dodd orchestrations are particulary noticeable. I even heard some trombone notes from Sahara and, obiously, Bond electronics.
The King Arthur moment at the end, turns me on! -

It seems we love different side of Horner. For me, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has been the best Horner since The New World. And I also love All the King's Men - and Avatar too. A very-very good score! -

Because I probably like more his more agressive side (wich he is using less, and less since Titanic)
Anyway, being said that , it's the softer cues from avatar I most enjoy, because the action stuff I think it's pretty bad composed (I try hard to enjoy "Destruction of.." , "Quadritch" but man, what a chaos! )
"Becoming one..." is specially good. -

Quite a lot of the tracks on this are very lacking in oomph compared with the originals, the theme to Zulu in particular and the 'Romance For Guitar and Orchestra' from Deadfall is dreadful. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

I'm at "Climbing Up Iknimaya - The Path To Heaven" and hear myself in the land of Glory and Adiemus. Nice pairing. So far, Jordi's correct, since I can't believe I'm hearing a bit of the Zimmer sound in the first track. Let's see how the rest will be like. -

Says Valery Gergiev on the cover... or something like that.
And I thought it was excellent! (Though no surprises there since I love his Nevsky score.) -

Is it an LSO performance? Valery Gergiev is their principal conductor now. AND he conducted Badelt's K-19 with his previous assignment (Kirov Symphony)http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

I like it -maybe because it showed that Goldsmith could still find something new to do even at that stage of his career - but I would love to hear a proper "concert arrangement" of it - the demands of the film do mean it's rather stop-and-start and so doesn't flow as it might. -

NP: Avatar - James Horner
Curiously, "Gathering All The Na'vi Clans For Battle" does have that heavy tinge of The Might of Rome from Gladiator, even down to the Horner-ized version of the Gladiator theme. Seeing how Hans and Harry have been referencing a bit of the Horner discography, it's equally interesting to see how Horner approaches the MV/RC sound.... Sooo I'm listening to "War" now, and it doesn't sound like Horner, but rather a mish mash of "where did I hear something like that from" interlaced between the Horner strings and connective tissues... Given how the "war" sequence is suppose to be around 30 minutes of action, I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot more scores here......
At 07 minutes and 5 seconds of "War", there's an awesome 30 second of music that's extremely anthematic and proud in feeling, and almost worth the whole 11 minutes of rambling musical nondirection. -

Gergiev is arguably the worlds top conductor, particularly regarding Russian music, I have a number of his recordings and all are excellent.

Well put. I'd love to hear a proper concert version too, without the star trek sounding suspense music and the action material at the end. I'm sure it's a perfect fit in the film, but on CD it does indeed appear choppy and far from its potential.

Yeap!!!!
(and it's true, it has a sense of victory, I almost can see the bad guys ship being destructed).
and completly agree what whatever you said.
And I have to say, if I listen more tracks than "War", "navi for the battle" and "becoming one..." it's for 2 reasons:
1) It's music from AVATAR.
2) I don't have sherlock Holmes, yet. -

HAHA, those two are the same reasons for me. Sherlock Holmes will be better than Avatar, based solely on the fact that Avatar pretty much failed at fulfilling my non-hyped, zero expectation. I'm going to go listen to The Mask of Zorro now, a score that's almost effortlessly fun-ner and infinitely more enjoyable to listen to.
