Yeah. That's like going through TLOTR extended scores in one go. Only difference is you won't fall asleep while doing so. smile

...or lose the will to live.

I was thinking the same. Why you'd listen to this music outside the game though baffles me...it's awful enough in the game.

Cause I'd like to listen to everything at least once. Dunno. Be more informed than just talking out of my ass?

    Np: Avatar - James Horner

This is much better in crystal clear CD quality sound than that yukky 112k stream at MusicMe. After my first listen I pick up on some Zimmer traits which I found quite interesting to say the least but after a few more listens this score is unmistakably Horner. Unfortunately, I can't believe that this is all Horner was able to come up with after spending a year on the project. It doesn't really break any new ground and doesn't really separate itself from the bunch of scores he has written in the past few years. HOWEVER, in saying that, there are some outstanding stand out cues like wonderful blend of soft high and low strings and synths in "Pure Spirits Of The Forest" (although the bolder Batman Begins/Zimmeresque music near the end of the track is a bit distracting) There's the brilliantly exotic and hypnotic "Becoming One Of "The People", Becoming One With Neytiri" - probably my favorite track - and the big action cue "War" which is fun to listen to but Horner has done much better in the past.

I also hate the fact that Horner had to reach into his book of tricks and pull out that bird call from Project X, his theme from Glory, and the God awful four-note danger motif! Ugh!

Overall, I'd say this is average... maybe a notch above average. But with the time Horner had to write this it should have been 5 stars.

    -Erik-

Agree. Good but average stuff, the 4 note danger motif it everywhere, the trademarked synth female vocals / chois, synth pads are all there too, the percussion, the Horner melodies...nothing we've hadn't heard before...Horner stronger fans are going to love this! It's not bad by any means, it's quite good in places but nothing particularly great either. Feels like the bag of tricks is slowly starting to empty up? That, or the hype has killed it before it was born.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Only if you let the hype kill it before it was released. I think he's still got quite a lot of tricks in his bag, as is evident in a few of his recent scores (especially Beyond Borders), but he also keeps revisiting the same ones he's used for years - and that's not something I necessarily mind (though I can certainly understand why it would bug some people).

Oh you're right. They're just no such new tricks in Avatar. It's like his whole career and influences revisited in a single score (And there are a lot of surprising influences in this one), which might also be a great thing for some people!

  2. Can you list the "surprising influences"? smile

It's a good score for me, but it doesn't sound like the promised "yearlong labor of love". This is why it will always be a disappointment.

Stuff i didn't expect to hear in this Horner score, Vangelis, Zimmer, Thomas Newman in places...

  3. Thomas Newman??

Him I didn't found. Did you notice Harry Gregson-Williams?

Not yet smile As for Newman, there are several trademarked Newman-like metallic string rhythmic motifs in places, i'll look up specific track titles when i find the time. AS i said it's not a bad score, not by any chance. It's just nothing particularly great either.

There is a piano motif all around the score, mostly during the subdued theme performances, which is more-less the main piano motif from Spy Game.

    Angel Phillipe Rombi

I just had to play this one again today. Ample proof that film music is still going pretty strong and certainly not in the dire state that many have alluded to.

I can see Erik's point about this one being Williams'esque (and Demetris' about being Delerue inspired). But only in the same way that Williams' scores are sometimes Copeland'esque or Rosza'esque. Can't see what all the fuss is about?

Indeed. The piano motif from Spy Game has a special guest appearance in "Becoming one of "The People"- Becoming one with Neytiri" (7:00 - 7:30).

Some of the synth work is very Gregson Williams esque too.

Interestingly, that clip from the official website ("Into The Na'vi World") doesn't seem to be on the OST at all, though there are sections similar to it.

I´m afraid a lot of music is missing. It´s a two and a half hour movie after all. I don´t know how much score Horner wrote/recorded, but probably and hour and a half/two hours?

That's understandable, they nearly filled the CD to the brim with score anyway. It's just kinda odd for them to not include the sample put on the official OST page itself. Unless it's a plan for a "deluxe edition" or something.

  6. NP: The Manhattan Project - Philippe Sarde

Saw this being commented on over on the FSM messageboard and decided to take a listen.

Unfortunately the 30+ minute release is currently only available as a Varese LP. However, there's an 18-minute selection included as part of the release to Sister Mary Explains It All.

This selection contains some tense tracks (with an 80's-influenced synth drum pad) as well as some lighter moments (reflecting the comedy aspect of the movie no doubt). The "Resolution/End Titles" track is a certain highlight.

    NP:Avatar (Horner)

I was listening this one from 2 days.

I'm enjoying it, because of the main theme is addictive and there is some magic moments like "biolominescense", "Pure Spirits..." and "becoming one ..." and some anthems more typical from Remote control guys than from Horner. In fact, the parts I most enjoy are the JNH and HGW influenced ones.

But again, the Hornerisms are too present to take this score seriously, and not be angry with Horner. The 4 notes danger motif, the sakakuchy, the use of "four feathers"theme and "pah!" from apocalypto really breaks the listening experience and I hope it doesn't break the movie experience too.

And finally, the action stuff is disjointed (With the exception of War wich is incredibly powerful and it will be one of my most played tracks in the next months). "destruction of..." is specially bad constructed.

I really can see Horner getting a bad time composing this score. With Cameron temp tracking a lot of sequences and Horner leaving some of his ego aside.

PS: "climbing.." and "jake's first flight" could be perfert for Horner fanfarres, sadly they are some of the most annoying pieces of music he ever composed.

PS2:Thanks God He didn't compose LOTR.

  7. "The Flim-Flam Man / A Girl Named Sooner" (FSM)
    Jerry Goldsmith, R.I.P.

First score is a personal favorite now. Second one doesn't grab me, and seems to be all over the place, including one cue which rips the "Psycho" motif Duh Duh, DuhDuH Duh, only with pizzacato strings (and oddly enough, doesn't make a re-appearence).
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  8. NP: Avatar (Horner)

Familiar themes and all, this is incredibly enjoyable. I wish the danger motif wasn't writ large over a few tracks, but mostly I enjoy it, and I hear a composer trying new things in quite a few tracks. Not unlike what he might have written for LOTR perhaps?

The link to The Four Feathers is kind of appropriate when you consider the plot.
