This is such a superlative score for me.

I'm just amazed at the incredible film music that came our way this year. Agora by Dario Marianelli, Baaria by Ennio Morricone, two excellent scores by Giacchino: Star Trek and Up, the wonderous scores by Philippe Rombi Ricky and Un Homme et son Chien, Alexandre Desplat that produces excellent scores in his sleep and that is not counting the amount of older scores (holy grails) that were released this year. We are very fortunate.

I'm getting into Michael Giacchino too this year, with my first score of his, Up, which is totally enjoyable. I'm still waiting on getting Desplat's Benjamin Button and going backwards with his scores as well. smile Fun stuff! smile

Martin's right, 2009 is blessed with beautiful film music.

Absolutely loved it on the first listen, fell in love with it afterwards. One very mature and truly beautiful musical work. I am constantly amazed by Dario's abilities, talents and musicianship.

Yes Demetris, Agora takes a long time to digest and is very satisfying in the long run. Very detailed.

    Now listening Avatar James Horner

Into the 4th cue and it is a perfect 4 so far. Percussion lovers will love this one.

That weird French site has been a great way to discover new scores without spending money right away, see if we like it and then getting the scores that are really worth it. punk

    This site rocks!

NP : BOOM! - John Barry

One of my favourite JB scores, it's very strange and very dark with exotic orchestration, gongs, sitars etc, incredibly moody but very melodic. I can't imagine anyone able to write something like this now, not even Barry himself.

    The Fly II (Chris Young)

Those first 3 cues !!!! love This is the Young I want more of. The two themes in these are among my favourite of the composer. The Horner influences are clear in the rest of the score. It's almost these guys had the same style of writing back in the day ('Accelerated Brundle Disease', 'Bartok Barbaro', 'What's the Magic Word?').

The terror stuff is truly impressive too ('Musca Domestica Metastasis', 'The Fly March'). I prefer this to the craziness of 'Drag Me to Hell'.

A very FLY piece of work. cheesy

Edit: oh man we are gonna have such a good time watching the film. "Glory", danger motif, Morriccone,.... a movie music orgy.

Dreamy! My origins are from Constantinopole (Istanbul as more people know it) and both the film and the score is a bittersweet experience for me.

I won't disagree with you. But anyway in my family we call it Constantinopole and I'm used to call it that way. And somethings you can't let go easily. smile

I'm well aware of it, and I appreciate the historical hurt.

But the one thing I do know from recent and not-so-recent history: both on a personal AND a national level, healing only follows after acceptance, because what was will never ever come again. At least never in the way, shape and form those longing for it would want it to be. sad

NP: 91 Tracks from 2009 Scores - Various Artists

Some really good music was composed this year. I'm currently listening to Desplat's stunning main theme from New Moon I haven't been this excited about a Desplat piece since Birth's "Prologue."

Up Next: The "Main Theme" and "Finale" from Rombi's Un Homme Et Son Chien <-- Brilliant score!

I think he was getting confused with Sherlock Holmes quoting Morricone!
  2. Hero (Tan Dun)

The superb theme caught my attention in the film, years after I decided to buy the score. Best theme rendition in 'Love in Distance' and a slightly more uptempo version in 'Spirit Fight'. If you can get over the fact this score sounds the same for pretty much the entire album, there is much to like here, because the melodies possess a rich quality aided by colourful orchestral backing. But what you WILL love are the stunning violin solos by Itzhak Perlman and Tan Dun. The performances and recording are breathtaking.
