How I Met Your Dragon John Powell

I was somewhat lukewarm to this score when I first heard it, mostly due to the overly long album. Although I still don't quite agree with the 5 star reviews it has received, it's become my favourite score of 2010 (along with JNH's Airbender) thus far.

As an album, once cut down to 50 minutes, I'd give it about 4 stars - which is a very very good rating. I love it

    Fair enough.

    Well, that changes everything.
It clearly is a brilliant work, wonderfully executed with a clear sense of historic value, dramatic storytelling and a deep understanding of human psychology.

The music is wonderful, and a beautiful, consistent, thematically rich listen.
All in all a most worthwhile experience.

    I have no backbone.
    At all.

It's nice to know there's someone who doesn't like Kingdom of Heaven.

    It's so boring!

The movie, definitely. It's in the failed post-Gladiator attempts to repeat his success, just like Robin Hood. The music though, it's good.

In this case, absolutely. Nobody's right or wrong. smile (Except me, I'm always right.)

Personally, Kingdom of Heaven just sends me to sleep.... I'd like to enjoy it though!

I am not driven crazy about her. Latest babe i've seen on cinema and who's wholly dressed but completely sexy and charming, is Jessica Biel in A-TEAM. Plus in the movie (KOH), Eva Green is overshadowed by that "d@@k" wink

    That don't like hot babes.
But are more into olive oil.

    I'm so disappointed. sad
The extra virgine really would have done it for me too. lick

In a semi-related story: on the boat trip I was on yesterday, one of the guests (none of whom I actually knew) was one of those insanely camp over-the-top whoopsy-daisy gay guys, complete with leather outfit and cap (I kid you not! Stereotyping galore!). A lovely bloke, but WAY over the top with extremely overt sexual innuendo towards all the guys on the boat.

I noticed it was starting to make some of the other people on the boat uncomfortable, but they didn't want to really make a confrontation out of it. So I shocked the shit out of him by completely seriously addressing his advances, even with a complete deadpan face suggesting I'd had far worse than him, and finally scaring him off by trying to set up a date between me, him and three of my (rather fictional) friends.... biggrin
Got me some thumbs up around the boat.

  1. I will stand up for Eva Green and KOH. She's great, and it's not bad at all. Its director's cut has 3 problems amidst the things it gets right:
    1. Martin Csokas as the thinnest villain of all
    2. Orlando Bloom doesn't seem like the best choice of lead. Particularly given some of the rabbits his character pulls out of his sleeve.
    3. As Martijn said, a bit too much 21st century politics. There's always going to be a bit, given when the film was made, but maybe it needed a bit less.

And there's nothing really wrong with ROBIN HOOD. It already doesn't have Kevin Costner, and that's a major start.

Just gets better with each listen. I think you could make an awesome 40 minute album for those less inclined to listen to anything longer (basically editing out the slower, 'texture'-based moments), but I must admit I do like it at its current length. A very worthwhile and rewarding listen.

Save for Arnold's next big score, I'll be surprised if anything this year tops this and Powell's Dragon score. But I certainly wouldn't mind.
