    Stay Tuned - Bruce Broughton

The longer this goes on, the more irritating it becomes. Awful album.
  1. Jerry Goldsmith - Lonely Are the Brave

Great score with a wonderful theme. Very early outing for Jerry, 1962 and he already's got his style all over the place, which makes the score even more attractive. The Varese CD Club release that got sold out was a very welcome release and I'm glad to own it.

Ouch... I figured being at only 36 minutes, and 16 minutes of bonus cues it would've been actually not too awful. Maybe its awfulness is why it hasn't been released until now.

But I'll listen to it without any sort of judgment. smile

It's probably a good score in the film (haven't seen it), but it's very much opposite to what I like to listen to on an album. The 23 tracks of score are almost all mickey-mousey variations on a very short main theme. I can't say they didn't say that's exactly what it is in their description of the album, so I have no idea why I bought it. Only my shrink could tell you that.
  4. UNTOLD LEGENDS: DARK KINGDOM - LAURA KARPMAN

A two hour gamerip from a 2007 RPG holding powerhouse orchestral and choral music from a composer who has delivered one of the best game scores in recent memory, namely Everquest II. Bring it on please...

But this one sounds totally different from Everquest II which was very thematic as well as powerful. For Untold Legends Karpman has written largely non-thematic material but you have to hear how the orchestra and choir is used to create incredibly powerful soundscapes. Dark disonnance, percussive sections, choral power, while innovatively structured. The orchestrations are nothing short of brilliant. Normally music without any themes I quickly turn off, but here I was intruiged all the way through. Fans of mostly ambient but powerful orchestral / choral music should have a boner while listening to this.

I just have add some final words on this one now I'm done listening. As unmemorable the music itself is, the experience of hearing these dark Goldenthal-esque soundscapes is anything but unmemorable. I'd never have guessed a woman could write such disonnant, powerful and awesome sounding cues, thanks also to the topnotch orchestrations and combination of orchestra / choir. Once again, the music is highly original and totally unlike any other game score I've ever come across. It's worth checking out if you manage to find the gamerip, because I don't think this has been released officially.

Derivative with influences and rip offs from all over film music but it is still one of the most entertaining orchestral thrill rides I've been on in years! And Debney wrote arguably his greatest theme - The Civilization Theme - which he ruined by tacking on Horner's four-note danger motif at the end of it but made up for it with the brilliant "Epilogue" featuring Lisbeth Scott's over the top vocals! Superb recording and the sampled chorus is surprisingly effective!

Thank you for inspiring me to listen to this again. I must have been in a particularly foul mood on the only previous occasion I listened to it, when I totally dismissed it and have never been tempted back. But now I have... and I discover that it's fabulous. Derivative as anything... but fabulous. Agree with every word you said.

Still liking this score a lot. I'm not a fan of the way the score's flow get started and stopped midway through a cue, but the writing is excellent and it's thematic enough to pull me through the whole album. This is one score that almost beg for a nice album arrangement with suites and such.

Too bad the most brilliant theme (the heroic one) from Killzone 2 is only heard twice or so. A real shame because I thought that one had incredible emotional value and made the music from KZ2 so much more wonderful.

NP: THE ESSENTIAL FILM MUSIC COLLECTION (Francis Lai)

Most of the big hits here. Love Lai's melancholic, sweet melodies. Yes, even LOVE STORY. Not THAT far away from Delerue. Probably not the disc I would brag about loving to potential girl interests, though. wink
    I am extremely serious.
  7. Now playing... (or recently)

Oscar and Lucinda (Thomas Newman) - One of this composer's very best. It has all shades of his more melodic side, and enough of his textural side that it doesn't get boring.

Camelot - Mychael & Jeff Danna

I'm curious about this one. What's it like, Alan?

NP: Tale of Despereaux - William Ross

Not bad. It has some nice moments, and some tracks that get boring after a while. While the album feels too long by probably 10 minutes, I think I'll still give it ***1/2. It is wonderfully orchestrated (knowing that McKenzie orchestrated it was one of the major factors in my choosing to buy it smile)
  10. NP: 101 Dalmations - Michael Kamen

This album thrills me and infuriates me at the same time. The album presentation is awful. Every track seems to be several cues all edited together. Frequently my favorite moments of this score come from tracks that also contain significantly boring music. A prime example of this is the track "The Wedding (Cup of Marriage)/Horace and Jasper/Skinner." The title tells you how well the various music from these scenes go together. The first four minutes are a beautiful rendition of the love theme, finally heard over some glorious church bells - for me it is one of the highlights of Kamen's entire career. It's a magic moment that immediately segues into some goofy sneaking-around music for the next 3 minutes! angry

I think I can edit a wonderful album out of this, but I wish the producer(s) of the album would have broken each of these distinct pieces of music into its own track. I would much rather have 30 tracks where each track contains one stand-alone piece of music than to have 15 tracks where every track contains the score for 2 or more scenes that don't relate to each other in any way.

I must also say that the end of "Pup, Pup, Pup, Pup, Puppies" has an effect that I have NEVER heard in a film score before. It's so cool! It sounds like a piano is being played faster than should be humanly (or piano-ly) possible. Does anyone know what I'm referring to? Is it the piano doing that? Has it been electronically altered? Either way, it's wild dizzy

So, after all of that, I'll give this album a strong ***1/2 in spite of the terrible presentation of this score, which has quite a few marvellous highlights.

First impressions are very Lord of The Rings-ish as it is very choral oriented. Both choir as well as echo-y soloists feature on the score which gives it a Rivendell/Lothlorien feel to things. And those long, sustained strings so loved by Shore are also evident.

There's also a smattering of ethnic instruments for an otherworldly feel.

Taking the "influences" into account, I still quite like it.

    HALO 3 - MARTY O'DONNELL & MIKE SALVATORI

Their best soundtrack IMO. I've always liked their sound, but here they managed to be totally great in the themes department, resulting in some goddamn enjoyable cues. Of course you could argue about the flow of the album which is all over the place, but hearing it as a gamer who loves how the music functions in the game, I don't have one problem with that flow.

NP: Strangers, Again - George Shaw

George spends a lot of his time composing for "webisodes", YouTube films produced by (in particular) Wong Fu Productions and directed by Philip Wang. These web-based pieces may be aimed at a younger audience than someone like myself but the music the composer produces for these is certainly worth a listen (e.g., his recent Agents of Secret Stuff, These Four Walls, etc).

The music for Strangers, Again is mostly for acoustic guitar and piano and I'm finding it quite a heartfelt piece (the entire score amounts to just over 8 minutes. It's not groundbreaking, but the composer's emotional input, for me, shines through.

You can watch Strangers, Again here.

I think the score and album is absolutely brilliant! One of Kamen's most under appreciated scores! I think I'm going to listen to that one today!

I have no idea if that piano going up and down the scale is performed by a human being or not but I do love the sound that is created!

I love the alternate cues on the deluxe release!
Not just the ones on disc 2 but also the differently orchestrated cues to the original and bootleg albums like "The Ambush" and "Night Battle" that are richer sounding.
I like Christian Clemmensen's review at Filmtracks today (although I'm not sure I agree with his "unintentional parody mode" comment).

  12. NP: Wallander - Adam Nordén

This is a little gem I found when browsing through iTunes. I remember being drawn to the music of the original Scandinavian TV series but I was disappointed when I initially came across an album of music from Wallander by Fleshquartet.

This is more what I was looking for: much more atmospheric. I hadn't realised that this was also available at Amazon until now.
