I'll be interested to hear what you think. I saw this release a few weeks ago but can't think what put me off it.

Actually, Shaiman only wrote the orchestral arrangement for Kyle's Mom. Tray Parker wrote the original music and lyrics for the episode "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo." Actually, all of the lyrics in South Park: The Movie are by Parker. Only the score and orchestral arrangements were by Shaiman.

NP: TANGO & CASH (Harold Faltermeyer)

All the synth score hate over at FSM has made me want to revisit my GLORIOUS synth scores! This is an incredibly cool score, although the suspense music doesn't do much. Could have done with some album mix here.
    I am extremely serious.

    NP: JANE EYRE (Dario Marianelli)

One of the few soundtracks I've bought this year; a true gem of a score that joins neatly into the excellent track record of EYRE scores, for what is IMO the best adaptation so far.

I think it's actually the best score for a JANE EYRE film. Just as an album... I haven't seen any of those other films. (Now I run.)

    TREASON!!!!!

I'd sentence you to something horrific but I see you're already living in Australia.

We've been keeping quiet since you buggers shipped us out in the first place. We know when we're on to a good thing. wink

Guys, I realise I have said a horrible thing. Williams' score is the main rival for Marianelli's, and arguably much better in many ways. I listened to it last night just before making the post, and was perhaps more in the mood for the more stripped down textural sound of Marianelli's -- it just felt a little like Williams circled around his main theme a little too much, despite it's quality.

I also like Alessio Vlad's score from the 90s. I've never had a lot of time for Herrmann's just as an enjoyable piece of music.

NP: THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (Alfred Newman)

Gorgeous score, although the rendition of Händel's "Hallelujah Chorus" is one of the skimpiest I've ever heard.
    I am extremely serious.
  4. A Better Life - Desplat

More of that melancholy lyricism I've come to expect and love from Desplat. "Coming Home" is especially lovely.

Like I said before, having recently(ish) seen the film I can't understand the hatred this score receives, I wasn't too keen on some of the pop elements but I enjoyed what I heard and it fit the film fine.

I've never understood it either. I think it's the "legend" of it that has grown far beyond an actual value judgement. It's been on so many 'worst' lists that people should mention it without any further thought.

NP: She - Max Steiner (the 2007 rerecording)
Starts off strong and melodic, but quickly descends into Stravinsky-esque rhythmic devices.
It's very good, that much I can tell, but it's just not the sort of thing that will retain my interest for too long.
I can probably make do with 5 or 6 tracks from this in my Best Of Steiner playlist.

One of the greatest scores ever composed. It's in my Top 10 of all time. The FSM presentation is freakin' fantastic. The remastered sound, the liner notes, three different version of the score. Brilliant in every sense of the word! And "Outrigger Chase" is easily one of the finest action cues composed for cinema.

The Superman thing must have been a late addition that was inserted after the score-in-film was produced. Is there any evidence that its even Powell's writing? I mean, does it sound like him? I don't remember it well enough to know.

In the version I have, the track I mentioned above does have that Superman-esque march rhythm throughout. It's not the same as what's on the regular album or expanded release, which I do have as well....

Yes. It has! It's that I didn't fully played the whole thing so I thought it was cut, but it has the ostinato. So this must be the real complete score. Includes the complete music for the bank robbery and hospital sequences.

Yeah, it's a welcomed surprise to hear, and quite distracting from the rest of the album.

NP: The Last Samurai - Hans Zimmer

Seems like I'm going back to my Zimmer discography. I'm very disappointed in how synthy the album sounds, especially because the music is so good, but, begrudgingly, it does add somewhat to the new-age-ness of the approach. The action music is largely disappointing, but the Asian-inspired instrumentation, sound design and melodies are typically excellent and that's all that really matter to me.
