The Superman thing must have been a late addition that was inserted after the score-in-film was produced. Is there any evidence that its even Powell's writing? I mean, does it sound like him? I don't remember it well enough to know.

In the version I have, the track I mentioned above does have that Superman-esque march rhythm throughout. It's not the same as what's on the regular album or expanded release, which I do have as well....
  1. NP: The Skin I Live In (Iglesias)

As an album, the second half is a bit of a drag, but the highlights -- concentrated in the first half -- are bold thriller scoring. I like it. smile

E.T. (original MCA album) - John Williams

I'm going to disagree with what some people have said about this score. I think the 75 minute expanded is better because there is more depth with the cues included. A number of themes are explored more than what they were on this album (the flying theme was the most prominent but on the expanded, there's more a balance of themes). The MCA album is more of a quick appreciation, concert version summary of the score (much like The Dark Crystal LaLaLand album) (nothing wrong with that of course).

That's fine. To each their own. But to me, it doesn't hold a candle to the original MCA release.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I AGREE! I'm happy to have the expanded too, I just don't play it very much.

I think that's the way you personally interprept it, I think it's an honest comment that doesn't belittle anyone elses choice of preference, I've used it many times myself in regards to others and personally.

    Apollo 13 - James Horner

While the film has fallen out of favour with me, the score is an absolute gem.

...and yeah, gem of a score for sure!

  2. Yeah, that film is a sure crowd-pleaser, featuring probably Horner's best score of the 90s.

It's just I know how the situation actually was (I'm a bit of a space nut), perhaps I'm just being a bit too picky about the over simplifications that the film makes from time to time.

I feel the same way about the film 'The Untouchables'.

Yes. It has! It's that I didn't fully played the whole thing so I thought it was cut, but it has the ostinato. So this must be the real complete score. Includes the complete music for the bank robbery and hospital sequences.
  4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 - Desplat

    NP: JANE EYRE (Dario Marianelli)

One of the few soundtracks I've bought this year; a true gem of a score that joins neatly into the excellent track record of EYRE scores, for what is IMO the best adaptation so far.
    I am extremely serious.

Sadly that is true: it's pretty hard to really get lost in a sense of disbelief when the subject matter is one you are quite knowledgeable about. Even worse when you are passionate about the subject.

Worst case of that happening was when I was in the cinema watching Breaking The Waves (with the lovely Emily Watson).
At some point towards the end, the protagonist is rushed to hospital, where they desperately try and save her life in an absolutely heart-rending scene that really didn't leave a dry eye in the house...except for the girl sitting right behind me, who apparently was a surgeon in training and loudly KEPT going ON and ON and ON about the mistakes the doctors on screen were making!

Ruined the mood for me a bit, even if I can understand her annoyance.
Just wish she'd saved it up for afterwards.

I can understand that, I get a bit cheesed off when I see certain inaccuracies in films, my bug-bear is something that probably doesn't bother a lot of people here and that's the hardware in war films, particularly anything that's not set in modern times and is, at least to me, obviously wrong, even great films like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN has "mistakes" and one of the all time worst offenders is BATTLE OF THE BULGE, I'll not bore anyone with my reasons why.

There is nothing that even comes close to the Williams score, IMO (which also happens to be one of my favourite scores of all time), but the recent film is MILES ahead of the Williams-scored and Herrmann-scored movies, for example. I've not seen any Jane Eyre adaptations beyond that.
    I am extremely serious.

I second that. It's too bad he can't keep up with the quality of those (awesome) highlights, but it features several thrilling ideas, a great atmosphere and I love the (noirish) Herrmannisms that are scattered throughout. Definitely among the most interesting thriller scores of the year.

Weirdly, I also like the Trentmoller track, though it took me a while to get into it. Especially love the bizarre string touches. I'll be seeing the film at the New York Film Festival, can't wait to see how it all works in the film.
