Age of Heroes - Michael Plowman

Well, MovieScore Media continues to surprise me... I never expected to hear a score like this released by Mikael! It's very enjoyable, mind... but as "Remote Control-ish" as you can get. (Old school, though - Rabin or Mancina in their rare moments of quality rather than the modern Jablonsky/Djawadi crap.)

I liked listening to this one. An enjoyable title from MovieScore Media.

Tuneful and charming, but more mickey-mousey than I remembered.

Dark , richly thematic, densely orchestrated etc etc .... and it's a modern Hollywood score!!!

I can only welcome it with open arms!

NP: PASSION OF THE CHRIST (John Debney)

This is simply an amazing score! Debney is a good pastiche composer (and I know I'm gonna get Erik down my throat for that!), but this was his brilliant moment. I can't get enough of it.
    I am extremely serious.

The action stuff is much more energic, complex and heroic. It's a much more action packed score.

I find the first one better devoloped and presented. But this second score is richer and more complex.

It doesn't have "hero", "sacreed pool of tears" or "oogsway ascends", but it has the fucking amazin "zen ball master"!
  3. NP: This morning shuffle is taking me through some interesting scores - Herrmann (Ghost and Mrs Muir, Fahrenheit 451, Magnificent Ambersons), Iglesias (Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Bad Education) and Desplat (Birth, Cheri, Tree of Life).

Not a bad score in there.
Right now 'The Rendezvous' from BIRTH is playing. This is why Desplat got many of our attentions in the first place. Such a unique mix of minimalism and melody -- perhaps the best fusion of these two sides of his work that he has achieved so far?

  4. NP: Helicopter Fight - Largo Winch 2 (Desplat)

Very Powell-esque use of electronics and orchestra. Reminds me of Paycheck. The first score has also similarities with that one (especially Freddy's Betrayal which sounds inspired by 20 Items).

NP: Shining Boy & Little Randy - Ryuichi Sakamoto

It starts with a charming toy piano piece, and ends with two gorgeous suite tracks.
The main theme is really beautiful, played by tin whistle and piano.
A bit of Asian flavor, including samples of traditional music, is also nice!
(The movie is about a boy & an elephant in Thailand)

I especially played the last two tracks many times since I got this score. Very recommended! smile

If I could get into a Powell recording session, I would shout out to the conductor: Stop conducting and write your own music!!

QFT!!!! Gavin is one of those heavily underutilized composer. Distinctive writing style that leans far toward the classical side while deftly incorporating standard MV/RC musical tropes. His recent compositions for the Winter Olympic in Canada was excellent.

oh I need to check out the olympic piece smile

By the way, what's QFT? My dictionary told me it's "quantitative feedback theory" tongue

Quoted For Truth. It's when people agree with something and want to to express their agreement and also to give whatever was said extra attention, then they quote it and write QFT.

Close encounters of the third kind (Williams)

It's good in the movie but on album it's probably my least favourite Williams album. I don't enjoy any of it.

Not ANY of it? Not even the Debussy-ian finale?

I've always been very fascinated by this score. Williams has almost never been more dissonant than he is in the Barry abduction scene. It's not something I put on to have a jolly good time, but it has this forward thrust as an album (I'm talking about the original MCA one, of course) and holds together as a musical journey that sometimes takes detours into dark territory.
    I am extremely serious.

  5. RP: The Swimmer - Marvin Hamlisch

I came across this little gem yesterday amongst a bunch of other stuff I was browsing through on Amazon. A rather lovely listen. It was a FSM release but has recently appeared as a download via another label.

(Though I am not sure what source was used for the digital download: the original tapes or any cleaned-up FSM source.)

Definitely one of 5 I'd take with me to an island. The expanded album can send me to heaven like so few can.

NP Infernal Affairs II (Chan Kwong Wing)

The best of the trilogy (as is the film, IMO). Really moving cues like 'Cry', 'Forgive and Forget', 'Black Hawk' or '1997' are worth the listening experience. The sequences these particular cues score are so touching and sad.

Overall, the score is a winner.

Saw the film for the first time recently, and unlike the confusing Infernal Affairs which concluded the story this was indeed a nice suprise. So much memorable music too, again unlike the third one.

The last track is the only track I've rated *** stars in itunes. It's alright to listen to, but it doesn't really affect me. Perhaps I will get it after more listens.

It's an interesting album indeed, and it seems the perfect music for the subject matter. I guess I personally need some catchiness for me to get into a score. Impressive composition and orchestration alone doesn't cut it for me, I need something hummable. Williams nearly always have some great themes in his scores, and this is the only of the scores I have by him where no melody sticks out in my mind.

If the last track of CE3K doesn't provide anything hummable, I don't know what will... There's a build-up to an incredible memorable melody there... rolleyes
