I have not. I hear it's even more ridiculous than the first? More tongue in cheek? More commentary?

I did pick up on the not-so-subtle social commentary of the first film.

Yes, it is more ridiculous. The second one is more gag orientated, much funnier but not as good as the original but like I said, worth watching.

Lyricist DON BLACK shares his memories of John Barry, should be well worthwhile to those of you who can tune in.

NP: Superman Returns - John Ottman

I still dislike the Lex Luthor "theme", but the rest of the score is a gem (if a bit messianic at times...but then I guess the legend of Supes does lend itself to that kind of inspiration). The film is flawed beyond belief, but surely Ottman's effort, steeped deeply in Williams' tradition, must be considered a highlight with a great rendition of the Main Titles and lovely tracks like How Could You Leave Us? creating the completely right feel.
    Very nice, indeed. smile

I'm in the same mindset as you Martijn, Superman Returns is a very nice tribute score, with just enough of Ottman's material thrown in to make it fresh. The hate this gets is completely unfounded. It has melody, excitement and heart in all the right places.

I like the film too, it's entertaining and a bit nostalgic. And I though Brandon Routh was great in his Superman imitation but not quite the Clark Kent of Reeve.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  1. RENT-A-COP - JERRY GOLDSMITH

This has quite a bit of Jerry's 80s synthesized styling but that has almost never bothered me and it sure as hell doesn't in this fun little score with a delightful main theme. smile

Agreed, the score is actually very good. And I like the Lex Luthor theme.

I like Ottman's new Luthor theme... Yes, six can be considered a theme... But the rest of the score is terrible. Ottman was way out of his league with this score and his rejigging of Williams love theme was complete unnecessary. And Ottman's own new love theme... Or whatever you want to call those random notes that go no where and make no musical sense...it's an embarrassment.

  2. Today, my first day of real listening to scores this year, I've listened to:

Hans Zimmer - Thelma and Louise
Jerry Goldsmith - First Blood (Intrada edition, the only one I own)
    Vangelis - Blade Runner

    now...

James Newton Howard - Lady in the Water

Great minimalistic fantasy score with a brilliant choral theme. Orchestrations (the marimba in The party!), the main theme... Great Eatlon belongs to my very favorite Howard action cues.

The movie isn't good, I saw it in cinema, but the score tops it so much...

I really like that movie because I strongly relate to what Shyamalan was trying to do, even if he did it in a really weird and slightly egotistical way (casting himself as a writer who will change the world and then be martyred for it???) But yes, the score is definitely the best part.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  3. Another good part of Lady is the ensemble cast and the little character moments. I've always liked movies with slightly odd and offbeat characters that don't seem to gel at first glance, but manage to relate to each other or influence each other in direct and indirect ways. Magnolia and Grand Canyon are good examples of this.

  4. Shyamalan has a Twitter, and he's actually very open, and not self-centered.

I think that every person who has the chance of make a movie with his own story, would like to gave himself a big role.

Also, that's what's happening to Shyamalan. He's being martyred right now because of his ideas.

Exactly. This is part of the message of the movie. Everybody in the world has a mission.

    NP: SOLARIS (Cliff Martinez)

Eerie and hypnotic and ambient, this is my kind of stuff! I've always felt Martinez references Artemiev's "oceans" track from the original film here and there.
    I am extremely serious.
  7. Bernard Herrmann - North by Northwest

The recent McNeely re-recording. What a brilliant score. I've always loved Herrmann and this is a great listening experience. I saw the movie years ago, but I loved it, need to rewatch it. Great stuff.

The opening fandango is really all I keep remembering from it, but there's obviously more.

  10. No, this would be a score that's "too busy" for him.

Yeah, this one's brilliant (and so's the film!)
  11. What do you mean, Justin? I've always loved this score to bits and on the first day of score listening in this year, I can pull out some favorites.
