Lyricist DON BLACK shares his memories of John Barry, should be well worthwhile to those of you who can tune in.

JP : BBC RADIO 2 - Remembering JOHN BARRY hosted by Don Black

Really good show, mostly the usual suspects on the play list from Bond to Dances With Wolves etc but mostly interesting to me for Don Black's anecdotes about his long time friend, a near punch-up at a star studded Hollywood party where John Philips of The Mammas and The Pappas was talking about Gustav Mahler, John Barry reckoned he was talking crap and pulled out a wad of dollars and betted Philips that he couldn't hum any 4 bars of anything by Mahler, Philips offered Barry to step outside and Barry was more than willing, the near fight was broken up by Don Black, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini and Burt Bacharach dizzy

The Spanish castle Barry bought in Majorca referred to by his Father as Barry's folly.
    john barry's spanish home

Receiving a letter from a kid who couldn't afford to buy a saxophone but desperately wanted to learn, Barry bought the best available and sent it, Don Black mentions that JB was one of the most generous men he knew.

Black got one thing wrong, he mentions JB writing two new themes for On Her Majersty's Secret Service, one of them being We Have All The Time In The World and the other being '007', 007 was written several years earlier for THUNDERBALL and wasn't used in OHMSS.

For those interested here's the show, it starts at 3 minutes in.

I'd be interested to know if people outside the UK can access this?

  1. I'm in the United States and it shows nothing but his picture; no player bar, no clock, no nothing to indicate it would play. Not even a messege saying it isn't avaiable outside the U.K.

Works fine here...but it's apparently only available for 7 days.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. Well, if anybody has some program like Audacity, just record it, and we can all hear it. I'd do it for you guys*, if it played only here.

  3. SKYRIM - JEREMY SOULE

My own playlist is just excellence in musical achievement. Wonderful melodies that calm my nervous mind. Can't wait to hear it inside the game.

I love this music! It sets me on a wondrous journey (in my head anyway).

It took ages to arrive by mail but it was worth the wait.

    Bravo Mr. Soule! cool

    NP: YOYES (Angel Illaremendi)

Love the melancholy tracks, not so much the suspence (which Illaremendi does poorly).
    I am extremely serious.
  4. Some of Illarramendi's string writing reminds me very much of Georges Delerue.

  5. Yoyes didn't had too much suspense scenes, but the finale, the way that Illarramendi uses the main theme against the lead character, it's amazing. Presence Of Mind had better suspense.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Jeremy Soule

    omg

Right now I'm blown away by the cue Far Horizons. I haven't heard such a great choral cue in quite some time. Wow!

I think I need to update my 2011 favorite list.

Just listened to it, and I can't say I share the enthusiasm. What am I missing?
  6. I am hoping that it will be available as a digital download soon!

    Angela's Ashes John Williams

One of my favourite scores. The theme gets played a lot throughout the score, which it should considering how strong the theme is.

    Rapture - Georges Delerue

This is brilliant. I had begun to wonder whether the truly great Delerue was all already out (after so many recent albums with his music felt like they offered nothing beyond what had already been put out on compilations) but this one is extremely strong from start to finish, bolstered not just by the predictably stunning beautiful theme but also some very well-drawn darker material which frequently becomes heartbreaking.

    (That was a long sentence.)

Contrary to what I've said before, Skyrim looks to be exclusive to Directsong and no real news about an iTunes release. Let's hope that will change soon.

We're all wired differently, sometimes those wires cross and we all agree and sometimes they don't and we individually scratch our heads and wonder why someone who often likes what one likes doesn't like something else that one likes and vice-versa.

    No mystery.

    ...or is it???? confused dizzy

  9. The Ides of March - Desplat

I think Desplat is becoming more adept at writing strong themes with every score he writes.
  10. Back to The Iron Lady. Now I'm crushing on the track "Denis," yet another example of Newman's knack for writing bittersweet love themes (see also Meet Joe Black and The Good German).

I have bought lots of digital releases from Directsong and am hoping for a digital release there.

It is not unheard of (generally) of there being an "exclusive" CD release that is followed by a digital release further down the line.

  12. But Directsong seems to sell it only in physical form, for the moment. And that doesn't interest me because I'm running out of space to store all my cds in.

This, Tintin and Mars Needs Moms are the best scores of 2011. Fact. I think.
