The Good German was excellent as well. Another I want to return to. Some excellent themes in there that I added to My Favorites playlist

A great score, with one hell of a 'love theme' (though it's more of a 'love turned sour' theme).

One of his finest and most underrated. Also one of the great Academy Award scandals of the 2000s. What they saw in Gustavo Santaolalla's Babel that they couldn't see in The Good German is something I'll never understand.

Although BABEL's music is very spot-on as well, not better than THE GOOD GERMAN but still, very good musical usage in a very strong movie anyway.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Have you heard GOODBYE LENIN as well? Piano driven but equally gorgeous.

    Yeah, I heard it.
It's inoffensive enough, but nothing that really touched me.
(Not too keen on piano driven scores anyway)

The film on the other hand I found way better than Amélie.

A few quality cues from the MV team can be found on...

NP: Tears of the Sun (Zimmer, Lebo M, Jablonsky, Lisa Gerrard, and others)

I must admit I enjoy the 'Cameroon Border Post' cue, the variations on the 'Kopano' hymn, and 'Small Piece for Doumbek and Strings'.

That's a very intriguing score for a very mediocre movie. Love it. Some very strong, touching material in there. Kinda like a more modern take on THE THIN RED LINE.

I love it too. In fact one of my Zimmer top 10.

    Really? shocked
I always found Tears Of The Sun a bit of a snoozer.

Haven't listened to it in years.

Its first 2/3s are boring, the ending is very strong, all 2-3 pieces that pile up in the end of the cd.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I'd not call it as such, but i am glad it found more fans. It was such a moving experience for me when i saw the movie and heard the score, i never expected to hear such music in a modern, oscar-winning film these days.

What would get your vote then?

"Small piece for...Kopano I" A really interesting piece.
"carnage" (it could be a little bit too depresing, but i love the visceral sound: synth with vocals. And it has the first rendition of Cameroon Border Post motif)
    "Kopano II"
    "Cameroon Border Post"
    "Journey-Kopano III"

It does feel like Zimmer did the best stuff on this one, I agree. An interesting meeting ground of BEYOND RANGOON, THIN RED LINE and THE POWER OF ONE.

That's a great description of those cues.

The Power of One doesn't have synths. And the Beyond score one it's really powerful in the 70% of the lenght.

Maybe you should stop Powell site, and start doing an Elfman one.

How to Train is by far the best score of this year.

If it wasn't for the recording quality I would agree with you for sure. "Romantic Flight" and "Forbidden Friendship" are some of the most touching things Powell has ever written. And it's such a richly thematic work too, refreshingly so.

I saw the film last week and nothing in the music stood out, except for some nice piano music every once and a while.

NP: Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - John Powell

I love Buck's theme the most, but the music for the dinosaurs and the incorporation of Holst's The Planets is also very well done.

I haven't seen the film, is there a reason to deliberately reference Holst or are people just picking up on the (possibly accidental?) similarities?
