Where I lived in my life, at various times, was different -- only time I saw a score related magazine, was a handful of times in Books-A-Million, for FSM. That's how I discovered them.

I am sure that my guess for SCQ is not correct. Can you imagine a magazine for soundtracks that comes out quarterly? Maybe many years ago there would have been a handful of scores released every 3 months. Not anymore!

Yeap! Soundtrack Collectors Quarterly, later it was known as just 'Soundtrack'

I used to buy it ( duhhhhh ) quarterly because it coincided with my once every 3 monthly visit to the soundtrack shops in London, I used to buy the magazine in either That's Entertainment in Covent Garden ( long gone ) or 58 Dean St ( also long gone ).

http://www.moviemags.com/main.php?title … p;etos=200 <-a real memory lane for me here.

Looking through the covers of SCQ I see that the first issue I bought was #22 with Georges Delerue on the cover, I bought it in That's Entertainment on the day I went to see John Williams at Filmharmonic 80 at the Royal Albert Hall, great memories!

I don't know what to make of it. Howard definitely went for the modern sound but his orchestral voice is still there (even though that horn fanfare is ripped right from Goldsmith's Executive Decision). There's blaring guitars, tons of electronics... but I think that my love for electronica over the past two months has warmed me up to THIS particular sound.

I need to listen to it again but I wasn't put off by it and cues like "Hal Batles Parallax" has tons of Howardisms that fans will recognize and surely enjoy! It's not as bad as the samples made it out to be!

  1. But it apparently did very well at the box office. Any guesses how well it will do second week?

All The Pretty Horses - Marty Stuart & Co

One of my favourite scores. Evoking the some of the old western sounds but keeping it modern and contemporary. Perfect album length too.

I'm blown away by that statement. James Southall doesn't like it but you do?

I actually don't mind the massive amount of electronics in it. The thematic material cam be pretty engaging at time and helps with the listening experience. There are some good tracks, though most of the album requires patience to listen to, but it has grown on me.

That theme share very similar quality with the Goldsmith theme, but it's not a ripoff at all. But that last action track is pretty good.

Ugh! It's not note for note but we all know where it came from. It's blatent and shameful!

So that's where it came from! I thought it was a truncated theme from First Knight when I heard it.
After all the bagging I read about this score I found it to be surprisingly enjoyable on the most part.
It's definitely JNH in sound and style. Pretty fun score throughout.

NP: BORN FREE - JOHN BARRY

I listen to Barry's classic and most iconic works and I think to myself (in what must be the understatement to topple all understatements)... what a fucking legend! I would have killed to see him conduct live.

I beg to differ. Goldsmith's version has the second note be an octave above while JNH's version goes down an octave. Nut what's key in differentiating them apart is where they go afterward. Goldsmith's four notes is a part of a much longer theme that gets played in full for the most part. JNH's four notes is the theme and is arranged differently with that modulated chord shift constituting the bulk of the melody.
I can't jump to your conclusion that it is that blatant nor codemn it as shameful. The fifth octave jump has been used many times as a standard trope when constructing a heroic theme that it is more coincidental to me that James would end up using it.
Regardless, the score is growing on me as I notice more of JNH's own compositional stylistics.

    cool

I was lucky enough to see him twice, in 1998 and 1999. The 98 concert was best with Barry playing themes from Zulu, The Ipcress File, Bond....I could go on and on, lists of iconic themes right up to his latest release ( at that time ) The Beyondness of Things, I think the highlights for me was Tommy Morgan playing harmonica on Midnight Cowboy and returning to the stage later for the Dances With Wolves suite, a brilliant and star studded night with Michael Caine introducing the composer onto the stage, it really doesn't get cooler than that.

    Here's the program of the 1998 concert > http://www.johnbarry.org.uk/concert/concertdata/21.html

I'll be attending the memorial concert at the RAH on Monday, it'll be an emotional night for me.

It makes X Men- First Class look like a classic. What a disappointment from Newton Howard.

I don't know what to think about either score simply because I haven't heard them? Jackman's score seems to be getting the most flak with most people citing a promising first track followed by drival, JNH's score seems to be deviding people at the moment.

NP: THE MASK OF ZORRO (James Horner)

Vibrant, colourful, exciting. And yet another gorgeous love theme that is even nice in its "cream ballad" vocal version.

[Edit: But by God, how tiring the action music can become eventually, especially in marathon 13-minute tracks like "Leave No Witnesses"....urgh.]

Free Willy 3 - Cliff Eidelman

On the one hand, it's an inoffensive dramatic orchestral score with the general feeling of a family film. On the other hand, it's not really memorable and bits and pieces are either taken from Star Trek VI or better expanded in Ocean Men.
