Water for Elephants - James Newton Howard

    Very boring.

it's so soft, it barely shifts a tone (apart from the jazz) and it has one good track, the second one (because there's some life in that one). For me this is disappointing, especially considering the trailer music is much better than the whole score

It seems that I'm the only one from here who think this score is very good. But I know most people aren't attracted to this kind of music.

Eager to hear it too smile
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    QFT.

But I would place The Mummy alongside Mulan. The Mummy is just too much fun to be not called great.

N.P. Hollow Man - Jerry Goldsmith

Apparently this is regarded as the composer's last great score. The slinky Basic Instinct-like feel of the main theme, the bursts of measured but strident action music, it all adds up to something truly brilliant. Love it.

I like Hollow Man a lot too, but it doesn't come close to his real masterpieces. The one thing you can't argue about though, Jerry was a man of all trades and he delivered absolute glorious suspense music for Hollow Man. Not too many composers nowadays can claim that.

The complete Mulan is magnificent! I'll agree there.
But my vote goes to the complete First Knight as being "Goldsmith's last truly great score".
But only just. And that's due to the thematic nature of First Knight and the absence of electronics.

First knight is from 1995 and Mulan from 1998, so if you say that First knight was his last great score you're essentially saying that Mulan wasn't great. Coupled with the fact that you say that Mulan is maginificent, this is quite odd.

In any case I think Goldsmith had a couple of truly great scores in 1999, so I don't agree with any of ya.

And (like Timmer and Michael have said) I like it and enjoy it more!

Anyway, NP: El Cid - Rozsa

Surely in the "ULTRA MAGNIFICENT" category!

  3. CIVILIZATION V - MICHAEL CURRAN & GEOFF KNORR

You want good orchestral game music, even with some blatant (but very well done) classical rips, than look no further than the soundtrack for this strategy game. If you want the good stuff check out the cues for these factions: Persia, France, Greece, Germany, England, Arabia. There's an incredible richness to the various melodies. And if you'd ever want to hear a take on the glorious 'Jupiter' melody from Gustav Holst's 'The Planets', there's a cue that mimics it to perfection. Highly recommended, but be sure to concentrate on the factions I mention above, the rest is of questionable quality.

Curran & Knorr....try saying that fast 10 times. Sounds like a dish. Knorr is actually the name of a sauce/dish manufacturer in Norway:

Yes, we have Knorr too. In fact they are pretty ubiquitous over here (you buy a sauce which appears to be manufactured by someone else, but it usually turns out to have "Knorr" somewhere on the label!)

NP: Soul Surfer - Marco Beltrami

First listen... WOW! That main title cue blew me away. Gorgeous string melody with solo vocal and small choir ensemble! And then the second track "Turtle Bay Surfing" reminds me of something Goldsmith would have written... has that River Wild feel to it. So far two goosebumps moments in a row! I now have high hopes for the rest of the score...

It's gorgeous! As it stands right now... I'm 8 tracks in... it's one of the finest scores I've heard this year and one of the finest Beltrami has ever composerd. And what a recording! And every time that theme pops up - :goosebumps: - but I feel like I've heard it before... EDIT: It just hit me... Rombi's Angel. The "Inspiration" theme.

Then the correct thing would have been to say that First knight was his last ultra magnificent score or simply that you like it more. If you say it's the last great score that's the same as saying that none of his post-First knight scores are great, i.e. that Mulan isn't a great score.

And yes, I know that I'm being anal and annoying.

Currently listening to Rombi's "Hymne des fraternisés" from Joyeux Noel. This has quickly become one of my alltime favourite choral pieces, almost up there with Rozsa's "The lord's prayer" (King of kings) and Delerue's "Libera me" (Black robe).

NP : THEMES FOR SECRET AGENTS & SPY THRILLERS - Roland Shaw and His Orchestra

Some of the best cover versions I've heard with superb versions of Our Man Flint, Casino Royale ( Bacharach ), The Ipcress File, Mission Impossible etc but the stand out for me is his version of Henry Mancini's PETER GUNN, I have never heard a version so funky, it's friggin brilliant! biggrin

Shaw's arrangements are really fresh and give these themes more life than just a straight take cover version would, excellent stuff!

    White Lion - Philip Miller

Excellent music for a film which sounds a bit like Born Free. The score doesn't (though there are vague hints of Barry from time to time) - primarily melodic, with exciting passages, occasional African choral music.

Why would that seem odd? It can be quite a spiritual experience surfing the waves. Anyway, the chorus is small singing Hawaiian lyrics.

Calm, emotional, sober music. The kind of music I like the most. Nice waltz in the cue Waltz By The River. Definitely a winner score for me.

    First Knight - Jerry Goldsmith

I had serious doubts that they'd do this properly, but hats off to La-La Land, this is the soundtrack release of the year so far. (I am considering extending yesterday's slightly controversial "Goldsmith's last great score" comment to say that I don't know that anyone has actually written a better score than this, since. Haven't fully decided, yet.)
